1 Your III Bellringer…  Please place your phone on the front table before sitting down.  Think about the most climactic scene in your favorite book or movie.  What made this scene the climax?  What choices did the writer/director make that contributed to the intensity of this scene?  Share your response with a partner. I will accept thoughtful discussion in lieu of written responses.

2 Your Review…  As a review, the climax, a Greek term meaning “ladder,” is that particular point in a narrative at which the conflict or tension hits the highest point.  Climax is a structural part of a plot and is at times referred to as a crisis. It is a decisive moment or a turning point in a storyline at which the rising action turns around into a falling action.  Thus, a climax is the point at which a conflict or crisis reaches its peak that calls for a resolution or denouement (conclusion).

3 Your Objectives…  Today you will collaboratively read and discuss the climax (Chapter VII) of The Great Gatsby.  As you read, your objective is to…  Analyze how figurative language, syntax, and diction reinforce tone and key themes and contribute to the climax of a novel.  Analyze character and voice  Evaluate how a motif contributes  to the meaning of a text

4 Your Task…  With your group, your task is to read and discuss Chapter VII of The Great Gatsby and create a three to four ( 3-4 ) minute presentation of your group’s particular focus area.  Your presentation must effectively and engagingly teach your classmates the most significant, relevant information you learned while analyzing your topic.  While I will give you a topic area on which to concentrate, it is up to you to determine how to compile your findings into an effective presentation.

5 Your Specifics… Your group’s final product, which will be presented about 15 minutes into class on Monday, must be created with technology and must include ALL of the following  A brief summary of your topic as it pertains to Chapter VII and The Great Gatsby as a whole  At least two relevant quotes pertaining to your topic and the effect of your quotes on the tone  A THOROUGH analysis and explanation of each quote’s significance  At least three corresponding images  A Works Cited Page with appropriate MLA citations for the book (including page numbers) as well as any other sources used YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO USE KEYNOTE OR POWERPOINT

7 Your Exit Ticket  Take a sticky note out of the bin, write your first and last name and class period on it  In order to ensure individual accountability and collective success, have a group discussion about the questions below.  What do you still need to do to complete your presentation?  What are you personally responsible for completing?  When will you complete it?  Then, record the appropriate information on your sticky note and place it on the board before leaving class.
