Exit Pass: Should the U.S. Restrict Gun Ownership?
NAME_____ BLOCK_____ DATE_____ Exit Pass: Should the U.S. Restrict Gun Ownership? Gun ownership has been defined in the U.S. as the right to bear arms. This is important because it is a reference to the Second Amendment of the Constitution which some groups believe make gun ownership a right in the United States. However, gun ownership should be restricted in the U.S. because of the rising rate of mass shootings and the number of young people with access to guns. Gun ownership should be restricted in order to decrease the rate of mass shootings and the number of young people who can access guns. For example, according to the Department of Justice’s website, there has been a 20 percent increase in deaths due to mass shootings in the past twenty years (“Gun Violence Statistics”). This statistic shows that the rate of mass shootings has increased over the years. Additionally, more young people have access to guns. According to an article by August Wilson, more young people have died from violent crime in the past fifteen years than in any other period in U.S. history (24). Therefore, gun ownership should be restricted to reduce the number of mass shootings and the number of young people with access to firearms. As this essay hos shown, the U.S. should restrict gun ownership because of the number of mass shootings and the number of young people with access to guns. This is an important issue for the U.S. to act on because people’s lives are involved. So remember, gun ownership may be a right, but that right can be limited responsibly in order to save lives.
