Patent Classification Overview and tools Andrew Czajkowski Head, Innovation and Technology Support Section Turin 10 October 2013
2
Overview Why classification? What are some advantages/disadvantages of patent classification? Which types of patent classification exist? How does patent classification work? How can appropriate classifications be identified?
3
Scenario You go to a library to do research on ancient architecture in Egypt and Sudan. How would you find books on this topic?
4
Scenario You could search for books with words like "ancient" or "architecture" Which problems might you face if you take this approach? Synonyms and related terms ("primitive building techniques") Technical jargon ("pre-2 nd dynasty morphogenesis") Obfuscation ("painters and builders of the Nile") Language barriers ("arquitectura antigua")
5
Scenario How could you solve these problems? Library classification systems (e.g. Dewey Decimal System)
6
Scenario Dewey Decimal System 722 Architecture to ca. 300 962 Egypt and Sudan
7
Scenario You are searching a patent collection for documents on Portland cement. How would you find relevant documents?
8
Patent classification International Patent Classification C04B 7/02 Portland cement
9
Advantages of classification vs. keywords Terminology and jargon independent (including changes in terms used over time) Language independent A more complete and precise search
10
Advantages of patent classification vs. keywords Applied in a standardized manner to patent documents Available for patent documents published (nearly) anywhere in the world Available for (old) patent documents for which little or no searchable text is available Specially adapted for patent documentation
11
Disadvantages of patent classification vs. keywords May not be available for all areas of technology May not be specific enough for a particular search May not be available for all documents Potentially complex
12
Major patent classification systems International Patent Classification (IPC) Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) Japanese Patent Classification (FI/F-terms) US Patent Classification (USPC) replaced by CPC from 01.01.2013
13
Difference between classification systems Language availabilityNumber of entries IPCEnglish and French (w/ national versions) ~70'000 CPCEnglish only~250'000Based on IPC FI/F-termsEnglish and Japanese~190'000 (~450'000) Based on IPC USPCEnglish only~160'000

IPC: Structure (subgroups) More dots = lower hierarchical level
20
IPC: Structure (notes and references) Relevant symbols Relevant symbols, definitions Relevant symbols, definitions, versions
21
IPC: Revision Yearly revisions (as of 2010) Reclassification of old documents with new symbols
22
Scenario You are carrying out research on semiconductor lasers and would like to efficiently retrieve patent documents related to this technology. Patent classification can help, but you have to identify relevant classification symbols first.

Tip! IPC contains extensive cross-references Use references to find relevant classification symbols
42
Scenario A manufacturer of wind turbines would like to identify new technologies to incorporate into its products. Your task is to find an appropriate patent classification symbol to retrieve patents related to wind turbines.
