Influences on Family 2.01 explain factors that affect family life

Roles and Responsibilities All family member have specific roles Some roles may come along with a specific position for example: mother, father, sister and brother Other roles such as income earner and student refer to how that member spends there time For a family to be effective all members must be responsibly and do their part What are responsibilities of parents?? Children??

Roles and Responsibilities Take a moment write down on a scrap pieces of paper who are the members of your family and what each persons role is also evaluate how or does that person uphold their duties and responsibilities??

Values Values are beliefs and ideas about what is important Your character is based on your values You learn you values from your parents during childhood Learn values directly or indirectly Also may learn values from school, friends and teachers What values does your family posses? (remember 8 traits same as character… caring, fairness, honesty, integrity, respect, responsibility, self discipline, and trustworthiness)

Strengthening Families How can you strengthen your family? Having a positive attitude about life and family: family member who look for the best in one another have great potential for getting along, they believe that if they work together they can achieve family goals. Arranging to spend time together: having quality time with either one on one or the whole family together. Showing appreciation and love for one another: a hug, a compliment, a card, a note of thanks or doing something without being asked.

Strengthening families Sharing beliefs, values and goals: the family’s daily actions reflect what is considers important. A family teaches a sense of right and wrong. Member should share their hopes and dreams with each other. staying committed to one another: family members care about one another’s well-being and happiness for a lifetime. They are always willing to work out difficulties! Showing consideration and respect for one another: respecting ones privacy and space and accepting difference of opinion Being tolerant and forgiving: no one’s perfect!! Strong families may have their differences, they may even fight but in the end they are always able to work out solutions

Strengthening Families Sharing traditions and family history: seasonal rituals, old stories, photo albums, special mementos. Children will someday base their traditions on their family and experiences Taking time for laughter and play: the ability to laugh together, even in rough times.

Family Crisis New family members: adding a family member. For example: a new brother, sister, cousin or other member coming to live with you and your family. Can be positive or negative depending on how you react to the change

Teenage Pregnancy Having a child is a life-changing event This is especially true when the pregnancy is unplanned or unexpected and the parents are still teenagers Parenthood involves many responsibilities and are better handled when the parents are independent and prepared for children Teen parents face many challenges: financial difficulties, and typically find child care to be overwhelming Many teen parents give up there dreams of a college education to meet the responsibilities of parenthood Families of teen parents are also effected

Moving Most moves include changing school Finding your way in unfamiliar surroundings Getting to know new people How can you make the move easier??

Unemployment Loss of a job can happens several ways People who lose a job can have feelings of low self-esteem, anger, frustration, despair, and depression Financial problems are often the result of loss of a job Financial problems can cause stress and conflict Fortunately these feelings are all temporary and will eventually go away when the family member finds another job

Financial Problems Money related problems that are often triggered by loss of a job, a natural disaster, serious illness, or even a death in the family Many families deal with financial problems because they find their money doesn’t stretch enough

Strategies to help overcome financial problems Create a bill-paying plan: when bills are overdue most creditors will work with you to arrange a payment plan that will help you pay your debit. Find Help: several communities offer consumer credit counseling services to help individuals and families with financial problems. They help people develop plans for tracking their spending and to get out of debt. Tighten your spending: Understanding goes a long way when your finances are tight. Money for clothes and entertainment maybe tight or scarce. Mending clothes you have or buying second hand clothing can help. Preparing your meals at home verses eating out can also help.

Be understanding: putting other family members needs ahead of your own wants helps everyone get through those tough situations.

Natural Disasters Earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and fires are all natural disasters Homes, communities or even workplaces could all be damaged or destroyed The loss of a home or job can seriously effect a family finances Government agencies, private organizations and religious groups often provide SOME money, clothing, food, and temporary shelter

Homelessness Having no permanent place to live People can lose their home due to natural disaster, loss of job It can be a temporary thing or it can become more pernament

Health Problems When a family member becomes seriously ill or disabled The family may need to make adjustments for that family member that is ill or disabled Decrease working hours to be able to become care giver of the sick Children may have to pitch in more than typically Learning about your family members illness or disability can help you better understand his or her daily long term needs

Death When death strikes its natural to experience grief The closer you were to that person the greater the loss The persons age and circumstances of the death can also affect how you feel Everyone grieves differently Some people need to express their emotions and other need to talk quietly to a trusted friend or relative Family members need to respect that everyone grieves differently and in their own way Participating in gatherings such as wakes, funeral or other memorial services can help Funeral’s can sometime provide closure

Separation/ Divorce When parents separate or divorce usually one parent moves out Some separate for only a short period of time In other cases they decide to end their relationship Children often go through a difficult period of emotional adjustment They often blame themselves 49% of marriages end in divorce Separation or Divorce can often make the parents harbor ill feelings towards one another They can make negative comments to one another in front of the children or to the children

One parent maybe granted custody It is easy to feel torn between parents You should spend time with both parents and share your feelings with each of them Although most effects of divorce are unpleasant, most people adapt, and they grow to accept the way things are
