WHY IS AQUATOOLDMA A GOOD CHOICE? (4 of 7) Hydrological cycle Simulation-Monthly optimisation management Water quality evolution in rivers and reservoir (lakes)

2. WHY IS AQUATOOLDMA A GOOD CHOICE? (5 of 7) TEMEZHBV (Bergström)SAC-SMA (Burnash et al.)) EVALHID  Allows the development of continuous rainfall-runoff models to assess the available water resources in complex river basins  Applies aggregated models at subbasin scale, resulting in semi- distributed models  The results of surface runoff are obtained in each subbasin  Considers that the river basins and the “underground basins” or aquifers coincide from the top view. It provides the underground runoff at the surface drainage points

2. WHY IS AQUATOOLDMA A GOOD CHOICE? (6 of 7) SIMGES  Solves the management of complex water resources systems with surface and groundwater storage, intake, transport, artificial recharge, use and consumption elements  Applies a simulation-optimisation process through the equation:  The management rules that can be implemented allow the representation of complex real water resources systems  Applies continuity for the surface subsystem and offers several aquifer models for the groundwater simulation

GESCAL o Temperature o Dissolved oxygen o Nitrogen cycle o Phosphorous o Phipoplankton o Toxic pollutants o Arbitraty constituents  Simulates the evolution of constituents and pollutants in water elements.  The mechanistic models simulate the changes in water quality in a natural system by attempting to represent the processes that occur in the real system  Simulates Water Quality for the entire system.  Conventional constituents 2. WHY IS AQUATOOLDMA A GOOD CHOICE? (7 of 7)

Problem identification Water Quantity Water Quality Answer the next questions: What measures we have to take? What are the effect of these measures? Can we assume these effects? Can we achieve the environmental objectives? Evaluate multiple alternatives for different scenarios Sensitivity analysis 5. HOW AQUATOOLDMA IS INVOLVED IN DECISION MAKING? (1 of 2)

5. HOW AQUATOOLDMA IS INVOLVED IN DECISION MAKING? (2 of 2) Estimating Dissolved Oxygen and amonium concentrations in the critical point depending on the flow Effect in the river of the new Alzira WWTP How much phosphorous will entry in the Albufera wetland And all of these integrated with: -Reliabilities of the demands -Water quality in the rest of the basin And all of these integrated with: -Reliabilities of the demands -Water quality in the rest of the basin

6. OTHER MODELS: GEOIMPRESS, PATRICAL Y MODFLOW GEOIMPRESS is a simulation model which has been build up in GIS platform (specifically programmed in graphic script with ESRI ModelBuilder in ARCGIS 9.2 environment) The model works in GIS platform, with nonpoint pollution pressures simulating parameters BOD5 (organic matter) and phosphorus. MODFLOW is the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) modular finite-difference flow model, which is a computer code that solves the groundwater flow equation. The program is used by hydrogeologists to simulate the flow of groundwater through aquifers. PATRICAL is a rainfall-runoff model that also evaluates water quality. This is a distributed model that reproduces the processes of runoff, evapotranspiration, infiltration, surface flow and groundwater flow at the basin scale and includes capabilities to also simulate water quality.
