What are the threats to Biodiversity? Learning intention To understand what the threats are to biodiversity and which areas are affected
2
WALT To understand what the threats of biodiversity are Success Criteria A- Examine the threats to biodiversity B- Explain why and where the threats are to biodiversity C- Describe what the threats to biodiversity are Starter: Which areas are affected? Quiz….

WALT To understand what the threats of biodiversity are Success Criteria A- Examine the threats to biodiversity B- Explain why and where the threats are to biodiversity C- Describe what the threats to biodiversity are Activate: What is the global distribution of eco-regions? And what is their status? Use the map you have been given to answer the question above.

WALT To understand what the threats of biodiversity are Success Criteria A- Examine the threats to biodiversity B- Explain why and where the threats are to biodiversity C- Describe what the threats to biodiversity are Activate: Where are the threatened areas? Over Geological time, geologists have identified 5 mass extinction events over the last 600 million years. The concern now is that a 6 th event will occur caused by human activity…climate change. There are many ways to study the threats…none give a complete picture!

WALT To understand what the threats of biodiversity are Success Criteria A- Examine the threats to biodiversity B- Explain why and where the threats are to biodiversity C- Describe what the threats to biodiversity are Activate: Where can you study the results? Where does the information come from? Economic scorecard: World Resources Institute (WRI) shows the ability of ecosystems to produce resources Living Planet: developed by WWF monitors change over time in the population of representative animal species in forests, freshwater and marine ecosystems Ecological footprint: a measure of the human impact on the planet

WALT To understand what the threats of biodiversity are Success Criteria A- Examine the threats to biodiversity B- Explain why and where the threats are to biodiversity C- Describe what the threats to biodiversity are Activate: Where can you study the results? Where does the information come from? Red List: Endangered animals produced by the International Union for Conversation of Nature (IUCN) Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA): a multi-scale assessment produced by the UN

WALT To understand what the threats of biodiversity are Success Criteria A- Examine the threats to biodiversity B- Explain why and where the threats are to biodiversity C- Describe what the threats to biodiversity are Activate: What is the status of terrestrial eco-regions? The biggest concern is for the most ‘critical’ or ‘threatened’ eco-regions (see map). What is the link with hotspots? http://www.oas.org/dsd/Tool- kit/Documentos/ModuleIdoc/Summary%20for%20Decision- Makers.pdfhttp://www.oas.org/dsd/Tool- kit/Documentos/ModuleIdoc/Summary%20for%20Decision- Makers.pdf – for diagram 3.9 from p.75 in book The diagram shows how the trend is shifting towards the tropics…why is this?

WALT To understand what the threats of biodiversity are Success Criteria A- Examine the threats to biodiversity B- Explain why and where the threats are to biodiversity C- Describe what the threats to biodiversity are Plenary: Which of these factors has the worst impact? Now rank them in order! 6 = The Worst 1 = the least impact
