Chapter 7 Exponents and Polynomials Next Chapter

Integer Exponents 6/12/2016 Heading TSWBAT: solve problems involving the Zero and Negative Power Property. Students understand and use such operations as taking the opposite, finding the reciprocal, taking a root, and raising to a fractional power. They understand and use the rules of exponents.

Notes Complete the table. Look for the pattern. xy 4 3 2 1 0 -2 Ex. Do you see the pattern? The answer is NOT zero. The answer is NOT negative.

Notes Zero Power Property Ex. - Anything to the power of zero is one. Simplify. Now you try.

Notes Simplify. Ex. Everything in the parenthesis has a power of zero. Only the x has a power of zero. The 5 is separate. Ex. Everything in the parenthesis has a power of zero. Only the 3 has a power of zero. The negative is separate. Now you try.

Notes Negative Power Property Ex. - To get rid of the negative exponent, have it switch sides. Simplify. - Top to bottom OR bottom to top. Ex.

Notes Simplify. Ex. Now you try.

Notes Simplify. Ex.

Summary Write a summary about today’s lesson. Any base that has an exponent of zero is automatically ____. If you ever have a negative exponent, just switch it from the top to the _______, or bottom to the ____ to make the exponent positive. one bottom top

Homework7.1 Simplify.

Complete the Ticket Out the Door without talking!!!!! Talking = time after the bell! Ticket Out the Door Put your NAME on the paper. When finished, turn your paper face DOWN. Simplify.
