3 Paper 2 topics Choose one to compare/contrast RESEARCH the topics 1. The education systems of two different countries 2. The business strategies of two companies (in the same field) 3. Online education and traditional education 4. Attending a large college and attending a small college 5. Two leaders from history NOTE: All topics must be INTERNATIONAL (not Korean)

4 Paper 2 Write a compare/contrast essay using one of the previous topics. - Use point-by-point organization. - Your thesis statement must contain a position (argument)

5 Paper 2 Important Date: First Draft: April 25 (Thursday) - Print and bring to class for peer evaluation. Second Draft: April 28 (Sunday) - E-mail to me for feedback Final Draft: May 3 (Friday) - E-mail to me

6 Paper 2 Before you start writing the paper, or making an argument. You must do some research first. - Avoid using blogs, Naver 지식인, etc. for information. Do an Internet search After collecting some information about your topics, you can start writing.

7 Paper 2 Information sheet available on the website (Homework section)

8 Block Organization Contents organized into “blocks” Discuss all of topic A, then all of topic B.

9 Block Organization Basic outline: I. Introduction (opening, purpose of the essay, thesis statement). II. Body A. Topic A features - Feature 1 - Feature 2 B. Topic B features - Feature 1 - Feature 2 III. Conclusion NOTE: Make sure you discuss the same features for each topic!

10 Point-by-Point Organization Each point of comparison (“feature”) becomes the topic of a paragraph. Within each paragraph, the two topics are compared or contrasted on that feature.

Difference/similarity 1 - Flavor - Topic 1 - Fresh - Topic 2 - Canned B. Difference/similarity 2 – Health Benefits - Topic 1 - Topic 2 C. Difference/similarity 3 - Cost - Topic 1 - canned - Topic 2 III. Conclusion NOTE: Always discuss the topics in the same order!

13 Compare/Contrast Writing - Analysis - It is not enough to simply say: “This is how A & B are different; this is how they are similar.” Or“A and B are similar, yet different.” - The above is just listing information. - At the university level, some form of analysis is needed in comparison/contrast writing.  Go beyond “here is some information…the end ”

14 Compare/Contrast Writing - Analysis - Your analysis should begin by considering the information you have collected. - Ask yourself: What factors can I compare my two topics on? - How are they similar? - How are they different?

15 Compare/Contrast Writing - Analysis - Your analysis should begin by considering the information you have collected. - Next, determine a position: i.e., two smart phones: Which would you recommend to a new smart phone user? two countries: Which is better for a foreign investor? two universities: which provides the best opportunities to foreign students?
