Functional skills: course content 3 areas that will be assessed: Speaking, listening and communication Follow the main points of discussion Give your point of view and respond to the views of others Use appropriate language for formal discussions Reading Understand the main points of texts and find specific details Read different types of text Use headings, charts, etc to find information Writing Plan, draft and organise your writing, using a logical sequence. Use basic grammar and proofread your writing

What if I can’t come to class? If you can’t come to class you must: Text: You must add your name, Course name/code and tutor name to text. Important dates for 2014 - 2015 Term 1: 16 September 2014 – 9 December 2014 Term 2: 6 Jan 2015 – 24 March 2015 (Break on 16.2.15 between parts A and B of the course) Term 3: 14 April 2015 – 30 June 2015 No half-term!

How will you be assessed? 3 assessments/exams: Speaking, listening, communicating: Formal and informal discussions Reading exam paper One exam paper with two texts to read and answer questions on Writing exam paper You will be asked to write two different texts based on the topic given.

Exam dates Speaking, listening, communicating: 17 and 24 March 2015 Reading exam paper: 19 May 2015 Writing exam paper: 16 June 2015 Resit exams on 30 June 2015 if necessary We will do exam style questions and tasks throughout the course as well as have mock exams each term.

Tutor expectations Regular attendance – 85% to be sure of a place on a future course. A minimum of 1 hour of homework every week. Try to do some extra work in your own time: Work towards your Individual Learning Targets. Try to read something everyday eg newspaper, book, website. Try some of the extra work on Moodle. Talk to me if you have any problems or are not happy with the course. Keep a file for your work and handouts.
