3. What is Knowledge Economy? Knowledge economy is the idea of an economic system using and exchanging knowledge. The concept allows for knowledge to be used as an assets and a key product. People who are able to navigate the knowledge economy successfully have three attributes to them. 1.Curiosity and passion to learn 2.Creative mind 3.Eager to have change

4. A Flat World Author Thomas Friedman says that the world is flat. What Friedman is referring to is the competition of industrialization and emerging- market countries and how there is no vertical transition. The implication for teaching and learning is that in a flat world, students can inevitably get left behind. Teachers need to overcome the flat world by learning what to teach in the global knowledge economy.

5. Essential Cognitive Backpack Interpretation refers to students’ ability to analyze material, not just memorize facts about it. Instrumentation means students’ skills is effectively using their time, managing their responsibilities, and establishing their priorities. Interaction refers to students’ ability to form and sustain productive and fulfilling relationships that enable them to collaborate with others, retain their individuality, and communicate effectively. Inner direction refers to some of the ides that have pervaded this text: in particular, the capacity for self-reflection and knowing one’s strengths and weaknesses. (Koch, 228)

6. Cortney’s Thought's I feel that these skills can be beneficial to the youth of today, they are learning more often how to be self- sufficient and take responsibility for their actions and their work. Students also need to learn and will benefit on how to prioritize. This will help them in their future of continuing education and careers. This is important for the youth of today to be able to communicate affectively, this is a skill that is beneficial in every aspect of life. In many aspects of life it is important to know your strengths and weaknesses, this can help in future careers and knowing what to take on and areas that can use some growth.

7. Videoconferencing Serina’s Experience An experience I had with videoconferencing was when I used to take paralegal classes here at SCF. The teacher would rotate between Venice and Bradenton campus each week. But for the weeks that she was not physically present, she would videoconference with our class. The only advantage I found with videoconferencing was I didn’t have to drive an hour to take my class. But I did find there to be a handful of disadvantages with videoconferencing and they were all technology related. Videoconferencing is “a telecommunications medium that allows individuals or groups at different locations to transfer video and audio in real-time, face to-face settings” (Koch, 235).

8. 3 R’s of Education Knowing more about the world. 1 st R Thinking outside the box. 2 nd R Managing new sources of information. 3 rd R I believe my strength will be managing new sources of information, but the challenges I face may be thinking outside the box because sometimes it is hard for me to find alternate ways to accomplish tasks. – Logan Altman

9. Globalization Globalization is “the increase of global connectivity, integration, and interdependence in economic, cultural, social, and technological spheres” (Koch, 224). Citizens who can live in a global knowledge economy successfully have three characteristics. “They are curious and have a passion for learning” “They have imagination and creativity” “They have a rich sense of current events and are prepared for change because change is the new universal constant “ (Koch, 225)

10. Knowledge Economy Knowledge Economy is “an economic system in which the use and exchange of knowledge plays a dominate role” (Koch, 224). People who are able to “learn how to learn”, display strengths in: Curiosity Imagination Passion

11. Global Knowledge Economy Two implications that Diana Wilson would use is thinking outside the box and developing good people skills. Both of these skills get lost in today’s world because of the internet. I would ask my students to find all the resources of the web and inspire them to be creative. Also, I would teach my students good people skills by having them do jobs around the school where they would run into adults and would need to talk to them. We get trapped behind the computer and forget how to communicate with real people.

12. What is Metacognition? Metacognition is, “the understanding of your own thinking and learning process” (Koch, 226).

13. Skills of the Twenty-first Century 1.Knowing more about the world- kids need to understand the world economy, be able to identify the nations in the developed and developing world. 2. Thinking outside the box- students nee to think creatively to solve problems. 3. Managing new sources of information- students need to develop skills that help them manage the vast amount of information they are getting every day. They need to know what’s real and what’s not. 4. Developing good people skills- the ability to work with others and communicate with them.

14. Diana’s Opinion on 21 st Century Skills Knowing more about the world is important for me to teach my students. I grew up not knowing a lot about the world around me and I felt stupid when I got older and couldn’t answer questions about the world. Thinking outside the box is also important because you can learn so much more. If we do everything the computer tells us to then no one will come up with anything new. When I got into college I had to really study and make sure that all the information I was finding on the internet was real. Its amazing what people believe. I did not know you can change Wikipedia until I was in college. We have to teach our students not to believe everything they read. People skills are top on my list to teach my own children and my students. I ran into a situation this weekend where this child didn’t want to ask for something but she wanted her mom to ask. I think we are hiding behind our computers and we forget what it’s like to talk to real people.

15. Distance Learning Distance learning is “education in which students and teachers are not physically present at the same site (Koch, 235) Several Advantages for Distance Learning are: Students whom live in a more rural area have the ability to take classes that are not offered in their school. Distance learning is offered in different countries also so the students are taking a class with many students from different backgrounds. Gives students the freedom to discussion that are very diverse and opens up a student to new ideas and thoughts.

16. Synchronous vs. Asynchronous Synchronous is “distance learning students are virtually present through the internet at the same point in time” (Koch, 237). Asynchronous is “students from different geographical areas working at different times” (Koch, 237).

Questions To Ask For Teaching Online Course: 1.What do I hope the online students will get out of this course? 2.Why have I been teaching this course in this particular way? 3.What needs to change for the online environment? Which elements of my lesson plans do I keep and which do I leave? 4.How do I substitute an online activity for something I have done face to face? 5.How can I foster group work and collaboration among students who are physically far apart? 6.How can I improve the way I communicate with students? 18. Conclusion The twenty-first century challenges us to understand more about how people learn, communicate and do business in a global environment or what Friedman calls the “flat world”. Who we become as teachers will reflect the times in which we live-our global interconnectivity and our unending access to information and media. (Koch, 240)
