EQ: What was the legacy of Washington’s presidency?

Two key precedents established by Washington was a foreign policy of neutrality and the use of advisors.

In response to warring European nations in the 1790’s, Washington declared the neutrality of the U.S. (the Proclamation of Neutrality) and signed Jays Treaty French Revolutionary War vs. England, 1793

Washington used a Cabinet (or advisors) to consult him, which is an example of the unwritten constitution. The first Cabinet (1789): Washington, Secretary of War Henry Knox, Sec. of Treasury Alexander Hamilton, Sec. of State Thomas Jefferson, and Attorney General Edmund Randolph
