8. When can you use a calculator? Class ~ unless otherwise noted Homework ~ always Quiz/Test/Final ~ unless otherwise noted

9. What is your instructor’s attendance policy? Not attending means not participating. If you have an unexcused absence/tardy, you will lose participation points. If you’re (excused) absent, you have that many days to make up your work.

10. Why is it important that you attend every class possible? If you’re not here, you are probably not learning as well as you could in class.

11. Do you know the name and phone number of a friend in class? If not, here is your chance! Take a moment and do this!

12. For each hour of class time, how many hours outside class are recommended for homework and studying? 2 hours I expect that’s 2 hours per semester hour, which would be 8 hours per week.

13. List what you should do to be properly prepared for each class. Come prepared. Do homework. Preview upcoming material.

14. Explain how a mathematics textbook should be read. Carefully! Seriously, though, pay special attention to the bold words and the boxed items.

15. Write a summary of the steps you should follow when taking an exam. 1.Do the practice exam early. Check it. This helps with pacing and directions. 2.Write your formulas. 3.Answer the question completely. 4.If you don’t understand a question, skip it and come back. 5.Check your work and use all available time.

16. Are you beginning this course with a positive attitude? YES!!! Well, I am … how about you?

17. Explain why you believe this commitment (time to learn, do HW, and come to class) is necessary? The more you put in, the more you get out! Not paying attention, not attending, not doing work are all ways that lead towards taking this course again next year!

18. What are your reasons for taking this course? Hopefully, it furthers your degree plan … plans.

19. What are your goals for this course? Yes, passing … Anything else?

20. Have you given any thought to studying with a friend? Try to find a study group! Organize a study group! 1 in 6 students at CSEC are taking MAT 099 of some sort! Meet after school, during lunch, or get together over the weekend!
