Recruitment efforts require… COMMITMENT – as far up as possible CONSISTENCY – stay vested COLLABORATION – using resources CLARITY – Institutional sense of who you are trying to become ???

Context: Relevant Stats & Research 9% & 17% - college completion rates for students from lowest two income quartiles (Laura Perna, Pell Inst. study) 15% - first gen. Bach. in 6 years (Georgetown Center on Ed. long. study 2004-09) First gen. 4 times more likely to leave after 1st year (Engle & Tinto, 2008) Lowest SAT scorers (800-899) in highest income quartile earn Bach. at higher rate (52%) than highest SAT scorers (1,200-1,600) in lowest income quartile Duckworth – grit Dweck – growth mindset Steele & Aronson – stereotype threat Arnold; Museus; Jack – success of underrepresented students at PWI institutions Morales; Petty – active help-seeking & creative approaches w/ 1 st gen students

We have seen it work BEST when … STUDENTS: We help them develop grit, growth mindset, positive “entitlement,” and self-advocacy skills while with us (MS & HS) Go in with a peer group (ex. POSSE, Senior Send-Off, special partnerships) Other issues are minimized (e.g., financial fit) DO reach out and plug in COLLEGES/UNIVERSITIES: Create small cohort going in (e.g., bridge programs, 1 st gen orientations) Put proactive, intentional academic advising in place Services are proactive and integrated (ex. resume@NSBE mtg) Mentoring is normalized, ideally from “near peers” Institutional mindset not but door is open …

Retention in a “Routine for Learning” LEARNING PROTOCOL 1. Wake up same time every day 2. Review all subject everyday 3. Go to bed at the same time Key Factors Learning is a living process Language is perspective and contribution Personal experience is a marketable skill You don’t have to lose your flavor BENEFITS Improve time management Responsive vs reactive Creating choice, not options Create and improve connections Improve comprehension & creativity Develop a natural way to learn Improve critical skills/sharper mind Healthier attitude/tolerance/endurance
