It is a federal republic consisting of fifty states and a federal district The highest point is Mt. McKinley (6 194 m) – Alaska The lowest point is Death Valley (-86 m) – California The Mississippi River is the largest river in N. America National language is English Monetary unit – American dollar The United States, with its large size and geographic variety, includes most climate types

American holidays and festivals Martin Luther King, Jr.´s Birthday - a federal holiday observed on the third Monday in January that honours the late civil rights leader. Washington´s Birthday of President´s Day -a federal holiday observed the third Monday in February. The actual date of Washington's birthday is Feb. 22. Memorial Day - a holiday dedicated to the memory of all war dead. Independence - the day of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the USA declared its independence from Great Britain Labor Day - a federal holiday observed the first Monday in September

American holidays and festivals Columbus Day- a federal holiday observed the second Monday in October Halloween - it is festival, children walk through neighbourhoods asking for candy. They are often dressed in scary costumes and shout „thick-or-treat“. You will also see decorated pumpkins outside of houses Thanksgiving - fourth Thursday in November. It started when the Pilgrims survived the winter in 1621. People usually meet with their families. For dinner is turkey, corn, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie. Christmas – December 25, children believe that Santa Clause brings them presents under the Christmas tree
