First notebook day! 1. If there is a physics textbook on your desk, put it on the bookshelf by the door. 2. Label the first 15 pages of your notebook with the back of the front cover of your notebook being page 0. 3. Write your name on page 1 of your notebook along with your period number. 4. Attach the “Left Side” instructions on page 2 and the “Right Side” instructions on page 3.

Copy the vocabulary definitions and tables from the book onto page 5 of your notebook. After writing down the book’s definition, write the definition in your own words. 3 Your physics toolkit

Dimensional Analysis 0 Can be used to check math problem set up 0 Also used to choose a conversion factor

Practice Problems 1. How many megahertz is 750 kilohertz? 2. Convert 5021 centimeters to kilometers. 3. How many seconds are in a leap year? 4. Convert the speed 5.30 m/s to km/hr.

IN Question: 0 Assuming the speed listed is in miles per hour, what is Pikachu’s speed in m/s? 0 If Pikachu’s thunderbolt power was in megavolts, how many packages of 12 V lightbulbs can Pikachu power? (Each package has 6 bulbs.) Pikachu’s Base Stats: Speed – 90 Thunderbolt power – 95 1 mile = 1609.34 meters

Scientific Notation 0 How scientists easily handle very large numbers or very small numbers. 0.0000000056

Precision vs. Accuracy 0 Precision – degree of exactness 0 Accuracy – how well the results of a measurement agree with the “real” value

Significant Figures 0 Valid digits in a measurement. 1. All non-zero digits are significant 2. Not all zeroes are significant 1. Zeros before non- zero numbers are NOT significant 2. Zeros in between non-zero numbers ARE significant 3. Zeros at the end of a number?

Math with significant figures 0 The result can NEVER be more precise than the least-precise measurement 0 + or - : answer should have same # of figures to the right of the decimal as the value with the fewest decimal places. 0 x or ÷: answer should have same # of sig figs as the value with the fewest sig figs. 0 These are considered only when calculating with measurements

OUT Questions 1. How many significant figures are there in the following numbers? Write them in scientific notation: 1. 85.73489 2. 0258.0 3. 6.0000 4. 409.2 2. How many significant figures will the answers to these problems have? Solve them too! 1. 6.201 cm + 7.4 cm + 0.68 2. 10.8 g – 8.264 g 3. 139 cm x 2.3 cm 4. 13.78 g / 11.3 mL
