Rise of Macedonia Macedonia was a land north of Greece They were ruled by kings, unlike the Greek city-states They were very influenced by Greek Culture

Philip II of Macedonia In 359 BCE, Philip II gained power after his brother died He built a powerful army much like the Greek’s army Phalanx Sarissa: Macedonian Pike

Philip wanted to control Greece, so he tried to win the support of each city-state He went to war after he failed In 338 BCE Philip II and his son Alexander led the battle and won all of Greece Next, Philip II wanted to conquer Persia, but…he was assassinated, or murdered

At age 20, Alexander became king and was also a military leader Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, was his teacher Aristotle gave Alexander a book called the Iliad which made him want to be a soldier

After other Greek city-states heard that Philip died, they fought for independence Alexander quickly ended their revolt, or rebellion, by burning city-states like Thebes to the ground He had Greece under control In 334 BCE Alexander took his army of 30,000 foot soldiers and 5,000 cavalry troops into Asia to conquer the Persian Empire

Alexander freed Ionian city-states from Persian rule and conquered cities along the Mediterranean coast He conquered Egypt and named a city, Alexandria, after himself In 330 BCE he went back to Persia and conquered the Persian king Alexander went into Afghanistan and India to conquer where no Greek has gone before In 323 BCE, Alexander the Great died

Alexander spread Greek culture every place he conquered This spread of Greek culture is known as the Hellenistic period Hellenistic means “greek-like” The Hellenistic period lasted from Alexander’s death to 30 BCE Art, literature, science, and language was spread from Greece all the way to India
