Universal Design for Learning (UDL) & Differentiation Instruction Ashford University Tammies Johnson EDU 673 Instruct. Strat. for Differentiated Teach & Learn Professor Michelle Landry May 16, 2015

Similarities They include all students Universal Design for Learning (UDL) & Differentiation work together “The universal design movement changed how architects think about designing buildings. Similarly, UDL calls for a shift in how educators think about designing learning environments”,(Ge Vue, Strangman, & Meyer, 2014).

What are the Differences? Differentiated instruction focuses on summative assessments. “DI recognized individual student difference. Pioneer researchers like Maker and Nielson (1986) even sought ways to change assessment for the identification of underrepresented CLD learners in gifted education,” (Santamaria,2009). UDL focus on designing instruction in a different way. “They provide specific ways for each student to learn as efficiently as possible, without assuming one student's best way to learn is the same as another's,”(Puckett, 2013).

How Can These Strategies Be Used In the Classroom? Anticipating Planning Monitoring

Blending the Concepts Using multiple means of a lesson Using multiple means of presenting a lesson Using different ways of engagement
