7 Planner Homework Behavior issues Parent reads every evening and initials homework is complete and correct Efficient means of communication with your child and with me (after school plans, homework problems, etc.) Pay Comes home every afternoon and returns to school every morning

8 Take Home Folder Used to carry work to and from school and home Carry homework Carry finished work Carry school flyers, etc. Comes home every afternoon and returns to school every morning Please check daily!

9 Homework 20 minutes Monday – Thursday (to develop good habits & practice previously taught skills) Homework Notebook Should be student’s own work (is practice from class…if student struggles let me know) Parent corrects & initials in planner Math IXL sometimes a WS (occasionally will be science, social studies or art) Spelling Additionally students should be: –Reading at home –Practicing basic math facts (EDM and or IXL) –Practicing spelling

11 Behavior Love & Logic Principles –Teach children to be respectful and responsible by: Holding them accountable for misbehavior (in a kind and loving way) Using Logical Consequences for misbehavior Do not rescue children from their “mistakes” Responsive Classroom –Develops student autonomy by: Supporting student independence, decision- making skills and awareness of needs and rights of others (especially others in our classroom)

16 Reading Making Meaning (Comprehension) Mini Lesson Independent Student Work Time Rotation-Guided Reading Groups, Type to Learn, Independent Reading, Work on Writing Whole Group/Partner Share Assessments: Individual Conferring and Goal Setting, Stanford, & F&P Phonics Fountas & Pinnell Phonics Mini Lesson Independent/Partner/Group Practice Share Assessments: Individual Conferring and Goal Setting, Weekly Spelling Test, Writing Assessments (Fall and Spring) Reading & Phonics

17 Buddy Study Spelling Program Connects knowledge of spelling to daily writing 5 day spelling program: Monday - Choose, Write, and Build Following a lesson, student and teacher create an individualized word study list (6 words a week). 3 words from Individualized spelling list 2 words from high frequency list 1 choice word (from writing, lessons, science, books etc) These words will be written in their planners to practice at home. Tuesday - Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check Students follow a step-by-step procedure to practice their word study lists. Wednesday - Buddy Check Buddies work together, dictating their words and checking each others "Buddy Check" sheets. Thursday - Make Connections Students engage in thinking about how words are related. Friday - Buddy Test Students test each other on their word study lists for the week.
