2 Be the best you can be Year 8 Curriculum Choices 2015 Year 9 is a preparation year for the examination subjects students will continue in Year 10 for examination at the end of Year 11.

3 Be the best you can be The Curriculum in Years 9, 10 & 11 1.The Core Curriculum – students continue to study these subjects 2.Students study 5 other subjects in Year 9 which reduce to 4 subjects in Year 10

8 Be the best you can be Five Choices in Year 9 Students will study 5 subjects Students must make 6 choices Choices 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 will be their first preferences Choices 6 will be their RESERVE choice Order of choices very important – may get 6 th For Year 10 students will drop one of these 5 so they will study for 4 GCSEs eventually

9 Be the best you can be Languages and Humanities Students must choose ONE Language – Spanish, French or German Students must choose ONE Humanities from either History or Geography Students can choose more than one Language Students can choose both History and Geography

10 Be the best you can be Design and Technology (D&T) Only one D&T course can be chosen Food & Nutrition GCSE Graphic Products GCSE Resistant Materials GCSE Textiles Technology GCSE

11 Be the best you can be Information Technology (IT) Only one IT course can be chosen Computing GCSE Information & Communications Technology GCSE

12 Be the best you can be Physical Education In Year 9 students will continue to have Games and PE each week. Students can also choose to study for GCSE/BTEC PE/Sport which will be an additional 2 lessons a week where they will do a mixture of practical and theory work. Before Year 10 we will decide if students study for GCSE PE or BTEC Sport

13 Be the best you can be The Curriculum Choices Form Choose 6 Choices 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 will be their first preferences Choice 6 will be their RESERVE choice Order of choices very important – may get 6 th choice

14 Be the best you can be Your child’s future Aspiration for A Level and University? English Language GCSE Mathematics GCSE Double Science GCSE History or Geography GCSE Language GCSE Students who go on to study A Level will need the above qualifications which is why they are compulsory.

15 Be the best you can be Year 9 Preparation Year for GCSE in Years 10 and 11 Year 9 is a preparation year for the examination subjects, students will continue in Year 10 for examination at the end of Year 11. Before Easter of Year 9 students will have to choose one of the non- core subjects to stop studying in Year 10.

16 Be the best you can be Year 9 Preparation Year for GCSE in Years 10 and 11 There will be some other subjects that some students may prefer to study instead of the ones they choose now: Business Studies Child Development Science Triple Award Sociology Students will get support and advice about this during Year 9. Parents will get FAQ sheet, booklet and personalised Year 9 options form.

17 Be the best you can be Next steps for student Curriculum Choices Awareness - Monday 2 March to Friday 13 March Parents’ Consultation Meeting – Thursday 12 March Forms handed in to form tutor – Monday 16 March Students will find out their choices in the Summer Term

18 Be the best you can be Curriculum Choices Form and Booklet Parents/carers should have a copy of this – given out Friday Copies are available on the school website Deadline for return of Curriculum Choices Form is Monday 16 March – return to Form Tutor Any queries contact me at the school

19 Be the best you can be GCSE changes Most GCSEs are changing Some subjects will be graded A*-G Some subjects will be graded 9 -1 Specifications still being developed so some information in booklets is provisional. By time students finalise choices in Year 9 details will be confirmed

20 Be the best you can be Advice given to students Ask your teachers about the courses Ask your form tutor and Head of Year and Ms Negrotti for advice Talk to your parents/carers Think about what you want to do in the future Be realistic about what you enjoy and are good at Don’t base choices on teachers and friends
