1863 After a small Union victory at the Battle of Antietam in September 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issues his Emancipation Proclamation that goes into effect January 1st 1863. This frees all slaves in areas currently in rebellion.

May 1863, Lee again defeats a superior Northern army at the battle of Chancellorsville but loses one of best commanders, General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson.

General Lee invades the North and a three day battle (July 1-3) will be fought in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Lee will suffer his first major defeat of the war and his army will be on the defensive for the rest of the war.

On July 4 th, General Grant gains complete control of the Mississippi River with the capture of Vicksburg, Mississippi and the Confederate army defending it.

In the Western Theatre of the war the Confederates will win a victory at the battle of Chickamauga in September but then they will suffer a major defeat in November at the battle of Chattanooga.

November 1863: President Lincoln delivers his “Gettysburg Address” at the dedication of a new cemetery. His speech reaffirms that this war is about equality, freedom and unity.
