1. Caught in the rain A group of people are sheltering from the rain Among them are the Eynsford-Hills; Mrs Eynsford Hill, her daughter Clara and her brother Freddy. Freddy goes to find a cab, but bumps into a flower girl, Eliza, dropping her flowers into the mud. Eliza tries to sell flowers to Pickering.

2. Un Unexpected Meeting Shortly, they are joined by Colonel Pickering, while a bystander informs Eliza that a man is writing down what she says. The man is Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics. From their conversation it is apparent that they both share interest in phonetics. Higgins says that he could make the flower girl with the Cogney accent pass off as a duchess, merely by teaching her to speak properly.

3. Eliza Doolittle The next day Colonel Pickering visits Professor Higgins and they both discuss the wide variety of Indian dialects. Mrs Pearce, Higgin’s housekeeper, tells Higgins that a young girl wants to see him. Eliza has shown up because she wishes to talk like a lady in a flower shop, offering to pay for these lessons.

4. An Interesting Project Pickering makes a bet with Higgins on his claim that he can make her pass off as a duchess, adding that he will pay for her lessons on condition that Higgins succeeds. Higgins seems to be excited and challenged so he accepts the bet and tells Eliza that she will stay with him for the next six months and at the end of these six months they will go to the Ambassador’s ball. Eliza is sent off to have a bath.

5. A man with no Morals Alfred Doolittle, Eliza’s father, appears at Higgin’s house with the sole purpose of getting money out of Higgins. He seems not to be interested in his daughter in a paternal way. Higgins believes that Alfred has come to blackmail him and threatens him to call the police. He sees himself as a member of the undeserving poor, having an eccentric view of life with no morals

6. Eliza’s Ambition Higgins gives Alfred ten pounds, but Alfred refuses to take it because he considers ten pounds is too much. He only wants five. On his way out, Alfred runs into Eliza whom doesn’t recognise When he does, he looks uncomfortable, but proud because his daughter is very beautiful.

7. Eliza’s first Outing Eliza’s first outing is at Mrs Higgins house, because her son wants to introduce Eliza to some upper-class people. Mrs Higgins isn’t pleased to see her son, because of his tendency to be rude and unkind to her guests. She is a respectable lady who socializes with upper class people. She doesn’t approve her son’s attempts to make Eliza pass off as a lady.

8. The new Slang Mrs Higgins’ guests, the Eynsford- Hills have come. Mr Higgins wonders how Eliza will perform in this ‘test’ situation. Eliza enters and soon falls into talking about the weather Freddy Eynsford-Hill finds her very amusing and funny. Clara seems to be very fascinated by the new slang Eliza speaks.

9. Who is Eliza? After the guests leave, Mrs Higgins says that Eliza is not presentable and seems deeply concerned about her future. Higgins is only interested in having Eliza arrange his appointments and help him find his things. Henry reassures his mother that when the experiment is over, Eliza will have the manners and habits of a fine lady and promises to find her some employment.

10. A Princess of Royal Blood Eliza has a great success at the Ambassador’s ball. Her stunning appearance and ease of manners have convinced the guests that she is a true lady. Higgins student, Nepommuck believes she is a Hungarian Princess and all the guests show their admiration. Higgins is excited because he has won the bet.

11. After the Party. Pickering congratulates Higgins on winning the bet. Eliza feels insecure about her future, as she is a lady in the name only. She is upset because both men didn’t say a word of praise to her, but only congratulated each other. When Higgins returns to the room, looking for his slippers, Eliza bursts her anger and throws them at him. After their quarrel, Eliza packs her things and leave Higgins.

12. The Search for Eliza The next morning when Higgins finds hat Eliza is missing is very upset and in despair. He and Colonel Pickering go to Mrs Higgins house. She accuses them of being immature because they want to call the police as if Eliza was ‘a lost umbrella’. Alfred Doolittle is announced, dressed in fine clothes, looking like a gentleman. He has inherited a lot of money, but feels awkward and miserable as he has to support all hiw relatives. Mrs Higgins admits that Eliza is at her house.

13. A True Lady Higgins and Pickering denied having been rude to Eliza, but later admit that they were thoughtless. Eliza enters at ease and self- possessed. She tells Higgins that what makes a woman a real lady is the way she’s treated. She also says that she could marry Freddy who is kind or she would support herself by teaching phonetics. Higgins seems confident that she will come back to him in the end.
