3  Born: 1732; St. John's Parish, Berkeley County, South Carolina  Francis Marion was born in 1732 near Georgetown, South Carolina and the youngest of six children At 15, he set sail on a ship bound for the West Indies, but the ship sank. In 1753, when the French and Indian War, Marion joined a militia company led by his older brother Gabriel. In the Cherokee War of 1760-61, Marion served in Captain Williams Moultrie’s company where he proved to be an excellent horseman and marksman. After the French and Indian War, Marion established himself as a planter in St. John's Parish and in 1773, bought a plantation on the Santee River. In 1775, he was elected to the South Carolina Provincial Congress.  In 1775, Marion was named Captain of the Second State Regiment under Colonel Moultrie and he also served in Snow's Campaign against Tories. Marion again served under Colonel Moultrie at the Battle of Fort Sullivan in February 1776. In November 1776, he was promoted to Lt. Colonel and in September 1778, he assumed command of the Second State Regiment. In October 1779, he participated in the Second Battle of Savannah, Georgia. In 1780, he escaped capture at the surrender of Charleston because he had broken his ankle jumping from a second floor window the month before.

4  General Thomas Sumter was born in Virginia, August 14, 1734  A sergeant in the Virginia Militia he campaigned against the Cherokees. He accompanied a delegation to London and acted as interpreter for Cherokee Indians before King George III. Returning to the colonies October 28, 1762, he landed in Charleston and spent that winter with the Cherokees. During that time he single handedly captured Baron Des Onnes, a French emissary sent to stir up trouble between the British and Cherokees. He was paid by the British ministry' for information about Indian affairs along the frontier. Returning briefly to Virginia, he was arrested for an old debt, but escaped from Stanton Prison and came overland to Eutaw Springs, SC where he invested his savings in land and slaves. He also opened a crossroads store and earned such respect from the community that he was made a justice of the peace in 1766.  Fort Sumter that is in Charleston is named after him.

5  Andrew Pickens was born in 1739 in Pennsylvania. His family then travelled south and settled in the Waxhaw’s region of the Carolinas. After serving in the militia against the Cherokee Indians, Pickens settled down in South Carolina near the Georgia border to become a farmer, marry and raise a family. After war broke out, he became a militia captain. He served at Ninety-Six, South Carolina, Snow's Campaign and Williamson's expeditions against the Indians.  On February 14, 1779, Pickens defeated Colonel Boyd at Kettle Creek, Georgia. He briefly surrendered and went on parole following the surrender of Charlestown May 1780. After returning to action, he participated in the Battle of Cowpens Siege of Augusta, Siege of Ninety-Six and Battle of Eutaw Springs. He closed the war with campaigns against the Indians. After the war he served in the state assembly and Congress. He died in 1817.

6  They all used Guerrilla Warfare sneak attacks.  They were all important to America and SC.  They all had the British afraid of them.
