6 A bowl of salt water – This is not drunk by swerves as a reminder of the tears the Jews cried in Egypt. Bitter herbs (usually horseradish) – reminds Jews of how unhappy they were in Egypt. Bitter Herbs video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMglldaETwQ The Matzot (crackers or unleaven bread) Made as they fled Egypt and did not have time for the bread to rise. The Charoset (a mixture of apples, nuts and wine) – It is a paste that reminds them of the slaves who built with mortar and of the happiness of escape. The Green vegetable (usually parsley or lettuce) A reminder of the way God cared for them in the desert. Given them water and honey. A Lamb bone – This is not eaten but reminds Jews of the lambs killed in Egypt and their blood shed on the doorposts to save their firstborns. The hard-boilled Egg – Roasted in a flame reminding Jews of the animals killed as an offering to God. The Wine (a glass for everyone) – Drunk four times because God promised four times that he would bring the Jews out of Egypt.

8 Reflection task: Q: What is so important about the Passover to Rabbi Jonathan Sacks? What is worth learning? Q: What did freedom mean to the Jews and how did it come about? Q: Why is this night different from all other nights? The message of Passover remains as powerful as ever. Freedom is won not on the battlefield but in the classroom and the home.
