The South Carolina Standards Support Curriculum is an ongoing developmental process. The curricula and accompanying professional development will be made available to districts for optional use. The project will be developed and disseminated in phases. Project Overview

Roles and Responsibilities of Content Area Team Members Develop Instructional Planning Guides as specified by the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) for social studies in grades K-8 Adhere to SCDE deadlines for submission of work to content leaders for review and input Make all recommended revisions and changes as indicated by the content leader

Content Criteria Easy to use and teacher friendly Research-based organization and strategies Profound knowledge instead of coverage Acquisition of skills Application of knowledge using the acquired skills to solve meaningful problems Meaningful sequence of content and coordination of learning without excessive repetition Suggested time frame for teaching and learning the grade level standards Based on Glatthorn, 1997

Process Identify how content area standards/indicators were organized/clustered. English Language Arts Interrelations, Logical Connections, Thematically Math Foundationally, Sequentially Science Sequentially, Order of Complexity/Difficulty Social Studies Chronologically, Historically

Process Consider instructional time line (including state/district schedules) to determine available time for instruction Determine time required to teach standards/indicators

Process Develop pacing guides chart by organizing standards/indicators by marking periods or semesters Review scope and sequence for vertical and horizontal articulation Review scope and sequence to determine gaps across grade levels

Process Develop the instructional planning guide that includes: Review textbooks and other instructional resources/materials and align to the targeted standards standards/indicators, recommended resources, instructional strategies, and assessment strategies/sample items

S 3 Professional Development Plan Design and implement a professional development delivery system (June 2009 - August 2009) Content Area Leaders, team members, and trained consultants will provide training Curriculum delivered to districts by semester and in phases

S 3 Curriculum Framework Will engage teachers in using the South Carolina Standards Support System (S 3 ) Curriculum and available resources to plan instruction
