1 History, Beliefs, Practices, Traditions, Holidays and Sacred Writings

2  Muhammad was born in the city of Mecca around 570.  He grew up in a wealthy family, but soon became concerned with the needs of the poor.  He went to the hills to pray and meditate.  According to religious writings the angel, Gabriel spoke to Muhammad.

3  The messages received eventually became the Qur'an.  In 613 Muhammad began to talk about his messages.  As Islam spread, Mecca’s rulers grew worried so Muhammad moved to Medina.

4  This departure from Mecca to Medina is known as the Hijrah. This happened in the year 622. This is the first year in the Islamic calendar.  A mosque is a building for Muslim prayer.

5  Monotheistic- Belief in ONE God.  The Five Pillars  Prayer Services- On Friday at the Mosque.  Aqiqah-Announce to the world the baby’s name. Shave the baby’s head and give the weight of the hair in gold or silver to the poor.

6 The Five Pillars 1. “There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet.” 2. Pray 5 times a day (facing Mecca) 3. Give to the poor. 4. Fast during month of Ramadan. 5. Pilgrimage (travel) to Mecca one in lifetime.

7  Ramadan-Fasting for one month from sunrise to sunset. A reminder to turn your back on everyday things and to think of God.  Eid-al-Fitr- Large celebration after Ramadan. Usually spans three days.

8  Written in Arabic  The Qur’an- words God revealed to the prophet (Muhammad).  The Hadith- Stories collected by Muhammad’s followers.  The Shari’ah- Guidelines for daily life.  Actions of this life will determine paradise or punishment.
