INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

ACTIVITY #1 “Just Do It” If you woke up tomorrow morning to find out a new invention or discovery had been made, what would you want it to be? Why?

You are a 15-year-old living in England where the Industrial Revolution has spurred the growth of thousands of factories. Cheap labor is in great demand. Like millions of other teenagers, you don’t go to school. Instead you work in a factory six days a week, 14 hours a day. The small pay you receive is needed to help support your family. You forcefully walk to work before dawn every day and work until after sundown. The dangerous machines injure your fellow workers. Minding the air is foul, and it is so dark it is hard to see.

What would you do to change your situation?  What factory conditions concern you the most?  Would you attempt to change conditions in the factory?  Would you join a union, go to school, run away?

Define: Revolution Overthrow of government, ruler, political system.. Major change in ideas or practice

Some Facts to Consider 1965: The Programma 101 was the first commercial “desktop computer”, but today would usually be considered a printing programmable calculator.

1970s: Hewlett Packard introduced fully BASIC programmable computers that fit entirely on top of a desk, including a keyboard, a small one-line display and printer.

1976: Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak sold the Apple I computer circuit board, which was fully prepared and contained about 30 chips.

2002: More than 500 million personal computers were in use and one billion personal computers had been sold worldwide from the mid-1970s up to this time.

Respond to the Question If we define a revolution as a sudden and significant change, what evidence is there that we are in the middle of a Information-Technology Revolution?

What is Information Technology Revolution?? The development over the last 25 years of technologies specific to the making and sharing information. Examples: Innovations in telecommunications and the invention and development of computers and the internet.

Industrial Revolution Question to consider: How does the Industrial Revolution help us to understand the Information Technology Revolution impacting our lives today?

What is the Industrial Revolution? What is the Industrial Revolution? The industrial Revolution started in England and it was the transition to new manufacturing processes that occurred in 1760 to sometime between 1820 and 1840. This transition included going from hand production methods to machines and factories that held them.

1 st The Agricultural Revolution Wealthy landowners enclosed their land with fences and hedges Larger fields = improved farming methods

So WHY did the Industrial Revolution Happen?

1. New technology in farming Jethro Tull = Scientific Farmer Sowing of seeds by scattering it across the ground took too long. Seeds refused to grow roots TA DAAA!!!! SEED DRILL!!!! Allowed farmers to sow seeds in well- spaced rows at specific depths More of the seeds took root= Crops boosted!

2. New Ideas: Farming and Livestock Examples: Crop rotation and the enclosure system.

Crop Rotation One of the best developments of the scientific farmers. Year 1: Wheat Year 2: Turnips Year 3: Barley Year 4: Clover

Improvements to Livestock Breed only your best Average weight of lambs went from 18 to 50 pounds from 1700-1786.

3. Available work force Population boomed + displaced peasants = migration to cities creating work force for factories.

Results? With the creation of seed drill, crop rotations, and improvement in livestock made up an Agricultural Revolution. Food supplies went up Living Conditions went up Can we foresee any issues with the increase in living population? Wealthy landowners buy up family farms, where are the displaced workers going?

Why did the Industrial Revolution begin in England?

Industrialization needed all these resources to have a Industrial Revolution. 1. Large population of workers 2. Extensive Natural Resources Water power and coal to fuel the machines. Iron ore to make machines, tools, and buildings Rivers for inland transportation Harbors from which its merchant ships set sail

The world’s first Industry was the textile industry Textile= type of cloth or woven fabric THINKKK!!! WHAT KINDS OF THINGS ARE MADE FROM WOVEN CLOTH OR FABRIC?

Major Inventions in the Textile Industry 1733 = John Kay’s FLYING SHUTTLE

1764 = James Hergreaves’s SPINNING JENNY

1779= Samuel Crompton’s SPINNING MULE

1787= Edmund Cartwright’s POWER LOOM

Group Activity Analyzing images in your groups. You have 15 minutes

Questions 1. Based on the images you saw, when do you think the Industrial Revolution was? 2. Did you see anything that surprised you? 3. What do you believe life was life for the workers throughout the Industrial Revolution? 4. In what ways would you go about improving working conditions in factories and mines? 5. What do you believe were the overall effects of the Industrial Revolution on societies?
