GCSE Additional Mathematics Information Seminar Dunadry Hotel 19 th November 2008

Agenda Welcome and introductions Facts and Figures Advice for candidates Reports on Paper 1 Paper 2 Questions and Answers

Facts and Figures Specification has been examined since 2004 Stable entry – around 3500 candidates Available in current form for last examination in 2011 CCEA is committed to having an equivalent specification as long as demand exists

Advice for Candidates 1 Advice is given in the micro-site Chief examiner’s reports are also available in the micro-site In general: Method; Accuracy; Timing; Formulae; Cancelled work;

Advice for Candidates 2  Notation;  Calculators;  Layout of answers;  Linked questions;  Sketches;  Given results.

Paper 1 Question 1 Be careful to draw a smooth curve Show any turning points properly Show clearly where the curve cuts the axes

Paper 1 Question 2 Make sure the calculator is in DEGREE mode Solve the equations in the given range Use their answers from (i) as a starting point for (ii)

Paper 1 Question 3 Don’t forget the determinant Make sure the matrix method is set up properly Make sure the order of multiplication is correct Write the solutions explicitly

Paper 1 Question 4 Must know the difference between differentiation and integration Write fractional terms using negative indices No need to simplify the answers completely Remember to include the constant of integration

Paper 1 Question 5 Show their method Need to know the links : Equation → Gradient → Differentiation Need to know the links : Parallel → Same Gradient

Paper 1 Question 6 Show correct method Give a clear proof by expanding each bracket correctly and simplifying explicitly Should use the given expression to solve the equation

Paper 1 Question 7 Need to know relationship between logs and indices (given on formula sheet) log 2 2 = 1 Method very important in solving the exponential equation Poor algebraic skills

Paper 1 Question 8 Check marks available when finding an angle Use SohCahToa only when there is a right angle Choose the correct trig rule Draw and label each triangle as appropriate When asked to explain, a reasoned explanation is required

Paper 1 Question 9 State the log equation clearly Axes must be labelled Give log values to 2 decimal places Use algebra with these values to calculate the unknowns Check that the answers fit the given data State the assumption made

Paper 1 Question 10 Must not start with the given equations and work back Solve the given equations, even if they can’t prove them Check that the solutions are sensible Before doing (v), interpret their answers in the context of the question

Paper 1 Question 11 Must read each part carefully and answer what is being asked A cubic graph in this question will always go through (0,0) Clear evidence must be given to justify maximum and minimum The sketch must show : 1. where the curve meets the axes 2. the turning points The positive value for the area must be given if appropriate

Paper 2 Question 1 Directions of forces must be clearly marked Problems with sin/cos resolution

Paper 2 Question 2 Frequency density calculated correctly Axes marked clearly with continuous scales Bars must be plotted accurately

Paper 2 Question 3 Use the information in the order given in the question Friction does not cause motion

Paper 2 Question 4 Identify the median class If they use a formula, it must be correct

Paper 2 Question 5 Preserve vector form Cannot use v 2 = u 2 + 2as Careless use of the resultant forces

Paper 2 Question 6 Knowing how to apply the formulae correctly

Paper 2 Question 7 Clearly label Venn Diagram (numbers or probabilities) Use the Venn Diagram when calculating conditional probability

Paper 2 Question 8 Clearly labelled diagram in each part State points about which moments are taken Must create a moment equation Moments require forces (g) × distances

Paper 2 Question 9 The sketches of graphs should show correct shapes In (iii), students needed to add the three times together In (vi), many had the wrong ratio Need to interpret the given information correctly

Paper 2 Question 10 Accuracy of calculations of moving averages All points must be plotted so that a best fit line can be drawn In (iii), still reading from the wrong place and/or not using the moving average point to calculate the next possible value

Paper 2 Question 11 In (i) cannot use F = ma Then - did not know how to answer (ii) In (iv), resistance is not 0.704 N per kg In (vi), need to calculate the deceleration

Paper 2 Question 12 Some students still confused with tied ranks Correct use of given formula Line of best fit must be drawn through the means Equation of line of best fit must use points on the line In (vi), students needed to interpret the information in the question
