Cones and Pyramids
2
What are cones and pyramids? A pyramid is a polyhedron with one base – A polyhedron is a solid with flat surfaces that are shapes A cone has one circular base and a vertex connected by a curved side
3
Volume of Cones and Pyramids The volume of a cone or pyramid is one-third the volume of a prism or cylinder with the same base – Remember that volume is reported in cubic units – Use the same formula for prisms and cylinders then divide by 3
4
Finding the Volume of Cones and Pyramids 1)Find the area of the base -Identify the shape of the base -Use the correct area formula 2)Multiply the area of the base by the height 3)Divide the product by 3 -Round to the nearest tenth -Use the given units Find the volume

Guided Practice Find the volume
7
Finding the Surface Area of Cones and Pyramids 1)Find the area of the base -Be sure to use the correct area formula 2)Find the lateral area -Find the perimeter or circumference of the base -Multiply the result by half of the slant height -Slant height is the length up the side of the pyramid or cone -Divide the result by 2 3)Add the area of the base and the lateral area to get the surface area Find the surface area
