2. Blaine Lilly | Mechanical Engineering Capstone Intro Session | Spring 2016 Product Design Capstone How is this capstone different? The Product Design capstone option is based on a course I’ve been teaching for twenty years, ME 5682. If you sign on for this capstone, you will take ME 4684 in Autumn, which meets with 5682. You’ll take the same exams, but you’ll have a separate lab section. In the Spring, you’ll continue with me in 4685, when you’ll finish your product prototype. You can count one hour of this toward your technical electives.

Product Design is a bit different from engineering design, because it includes a lot of topics that we typically don’t discuss much in engineering classes. We dwell on user–centered design, product architecture, design language, and design for manufacturing in 4684. You will work on a team of three or four students to develop a product of your own choosing.

This version of the capstone gives you a lot of freedom, but it’s also pretty demanding.
