Teaching Point: “To outline the different characteristics used in identifying a mineral.” Do now Discussion: Listen to the following characteristics and sit down when it does not apply to you.
2
(Almost) all rocks are made up of minerals Let’s Review Minerals TP: “To outline the different characteristics used in identifying a mineral.”
3
Atom arrangement determines crystal structure which then determines mineral characteristics Let’s Review Minerals TP: “To outline the different characteristics used in identifying a mineral.”
4
There are four main “tests” that are used to determine a mineral’s characteristics, and eventually what the mineral is exactly. 1. Luster 2. Breakage Patterns 3. Streak 4. Hardness Identifying Minerals TP: “To outline the different characteristics used in identifying a mineral.”
5
1. Luster: Metallic = looks like a shiny metal Non-metallic = doesn’t look like a shiny metal Surface Shine or No Shine TP: “To outline the different characteristics used in identifying a mineral.”
6
2. Breaking Patterns: Cleavage = break into shapes and patterns Fracture = break randomly Orderly to Random Breaking TP: “To outline the different characteristics used in identifying a mineral.”
7
Orderly (Cleavage) Breaking TP: “To outline the different characteristics used in identifying a mineral.”
8
3. Streak: mineral leaves a colored mark when scratched against a white plate Streak = color left over No streak = colorless/white or none TP: “To analyze the characteristics and composition of Earth’s minerals.” Scratch Against the White Plate
9
4. Hardness: Hard = scratches glass Soft = does not scratch glass Harder or Softer than Glass TP: “To outline the different characteristics used in identifying a mineral.”
10
Mohs Hardness Scale TP: “To outline the different characteristics used in identifying a mineral.”
11
All of these minerals here are quartz. This is just one of many examples of why color is the worst possible way to identify a mineral. Never Use Color As a Test TP: “To outline the different characteristics used in identifying a mineral.”

Mohs Hardness Scale TP: “To outline the different characteristics used in identifying a mineral.”

Take out your own Plicker Card. You should all have a number assigned to you. When you see the answer you think is correct, turn your card so the multiple choice answer letter of your choice is facing up Wait until the entire class is done, and do not change your answer based on others! Mid-Lesson Assessments TP: “To outline the different characteristics used in identifying a mineral.”
14
The data table below gives characteristics of the gemstone Peridot. 1.Peridot is a form of the mineral a.pyrite b.pyroxene c.olivine d.garnet Mid-Lesson Assessments TP: “To outline the different characteristics used in identifying a mineral.”
15
2.Which material is made mostly of the mineral quartz? a.sulfuric acid b.pencil lead c.plaster of paris d.window glass Mid-Lesson Assessments TP: “To outline the different characteristics used in identifying a mineral.”
16
Intellectual Engagement How many minerals do you think have been found compared to how many actually exist? TP: “To outline the different characteristics used in identifying a mineral.”
17
Instructions: Using what we just learned about minerals… Task A- create a table organizing the four basic tests for a mineral Task B- create a tree diagram organizing the four basic tests for a mineral Task C- choose 3 different minerals and find the tests that would identify them Flexible Group- take out your portfolios and meet with me in the back of the room. Class Activity- Testing Minerals TP: “To outline the different characteristics used in identifying a mineral.”
18
Lesson Summary In your tables of four, go back into your notes and consider what we have just learned today, and then… 1. Identify three (3) important concepts we learned today, and then… 2. Place those three in order from the most important to the least important concept. TP: “To outline the different characteristics used in identifying a mineral.”
