The geography of the Mediterranean Sea had a great impact on the formation of the Roman Empire.

Benefits of location 1.It was far away from strong empires, like Egypt and Parthia, who could prevent its early growth 2.It was a good location for both sea and land-based trade.

Origins of Rome Roman citizens claim to be descendants of the hero Aeneas, who fled Troy after it was burned by the Greeks. This story is contained in Virgil’s book, The Aeneid

Origins of Rome According to legend, Rome was founded by twin brothers Romulus and Remus in 753 BC. – They were descendants of Aeneas (and the gods, naturally).

Roman Kings From the time of Rome’s founding in 753 BC to 509 BC, Rome was controlled by a series of kings (“rex” in Latin), just like other empires.

The Roman Republic In 509, the Romans overthrew an abusive king and established a republic. – Republic - A form of government in which power is in the hands of representatives and leaders are elected by citizens who have the right to vote

There were several attempts to overthrow the Republic and restore a monarchy, but the Romans defeated them all.
