Close your eyes & think about a baby Newborn - “ You are so Cute! ” Smiles - Coos Rolls over - Sits up “ Just Adorable ” Starts to walk - falls down … “ You are so STUPID! Why can ’ t you walk like a normal person! ” Would this happen - no caregiver would still be positive, but sometime during a childhood this does change.

What is Self-Esteem -Self Concept? TOTAL PICTURE A PERSON HAS OF HERSELF/HIMSELF Combines the traits, values, thoughts, and feelings you have of yourself.

Children are born with 100% self-esteem. Ask a child if they are pretty or handsome and they will probably say “ YES! ” –Clothes & Shoes: new or hand me downs –Hair - body - etc.

Someway, somehow society teaches us to hold back and doubt ourselves a little.

Self-Esteem List 5 important people in your life and WHY they are special. Think about your strengths & weakness in ELEMENTARY school. Think about your self-concept in Middle/Junior High School. What are your strengths & weaknesses now? Which list was easier to make? What do you need to do to become the person you want to be?Take one of your “weaknesses and set a goal to improve.

Ways to promote a POSITIVE Self-Concept (handout) Treat children with LOVE & RESPECT Provide SUCCESSFUL experiences Object to BEHVAIOR - not the CHILD PRAISE child for achievements Avoid COMPETITION - always a loser / set individual goals Let them ACHIEVE & EXPLORE - Make mistakes Allow children to make CHOICES Release emotions in + way ENCOURAGE ACTIVITIES (art, music, sports, academics, etc.) LISTEN to them Clear EXPECTATIONS- Avoid power struggles

Ways to promote a POSITIVE Self-Concept (handout) Encourage INDEPENDENCE “Don’t do anything for a child that he can do for himself” Guide through LOVE not FEAR Be a good ROLE MODEL Nick-names - be positive - (we often become what we hear we are) Let children “overhear” positive comments about them HOORAY! OOPS! Hugs & Kisses
