Name _____________ Materials Knowledge ANSWERS What are the three categories of wood? Hardwood SoftwoodManufactured Boards Name a suitable hardwood for a bedside table? Oak, Beech, Mahogany State three difference between ferrous and non-ferrous metals? Ferrous metals contain iron Ferrous metal rust Ferrous metals attract a magnet Why is aluminium suitable for a tennis racket? Good strength to weight ratio. Name a plastic suitable for making a computer control pad? ABS or PP (Polypropylene) What are the two categories of plastic? ThermoplasticThermosetting What is a composite material? Combined materials to achieve specific properties. What is a smart material? A material that reacts to something such as heat, light, pressure. Composite materials What composite material is used for a bullet proof vest? Kevlar What composite material is used for a water slide ? GRP (glass reinforced plastic) What composite material is suitable for a white water rafting canoe? Carbon Fibre or Kevlar What composite material is used for a motorcycle helmet? Carbon Fibre Smart materials What smart material is used to measure a baby’s bath temperature ? Thermochromic What smart material is suitable for making moulds and models? Polymorph What smart material can be used for a glasses frames? MemoFlex

Name _____________ Social, Moral and Environmental Issues Explain each of the 6 Rs below: (6marks) _________________________________________________ Give an example of two moral issues that manufacturers need to consider? (2marks) _________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ Explain why the maintenance of products is important for consumers and the environment? (4marks) _________________________________________________ Discuss the life cycle and environmental impact of using plastic to make products? (4marks) _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ Explain why wood is considered a sustainable material? (4marks) _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________

Name _____________ Social, Moral and Environmental Issues ANSWERS Explain each of the 6 Rs below: (6marks) 1.Reduce the amount of materials used. Ie. Packaging 2.Recycle products into new products 3.Repair old products instead of putting them in landfill 4.Re-Think about if we need certain products and how we can make them better for the environment. 5.Reuse old products for another use. 6.Refuse products that are bad for the environment. Give an example of two moral issues that manufacturers need to consider? (2marks) Health and safety of workers Fair pay of workers Global warming and carbon emissions Reduction of waste they produce Explain why the maintenance of products is important for consumers and the environment? (4marks) Less waste materials go to landfill Less raw materials are needed to make new products Less energy needed to convert raw materials into useable products Better value for money for consumers Discuss the life cycle and environmental impact of using plastic to make products? (4marks) Oil is a non renewable resource and raw material Lots of energy require to convert oil to plastic Some plastics are non-recyclable Plastics do not biodegrade very well Explain why wood is considered a sustainable material? (4marks) Trees are a renewable resource and raw material Less energy is needed to convert trees into useable planks of wood Wood is biodegrade Trees give out oxygen which id good for the plant Trees store carbon dioxide which is bad for the planet

Name _____________ Product Analysis What does ergonomics mean (2marks) _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ What does anthropometrics mean ? (2marks) _________________________________________________ State four ergonomic features of the x-box controller below giving an explanation for each point. (8 marks) 1. ________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ 2.________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ 3.________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ 4.________________________________________________ _________________________________________________

Name _____________ Product Analysis ANSWERS What does ergonomics mean (2marks) When a product is made to be: Safe, comfortable and easy to use. What does anthropometrics mean ? (2marks) This is to do with all the different sizes of the human body. Anthropometric data is used to make ergonomic products such as chairs, irons, bicycles (anything that is used by human beings). State four ergonomic features of the x-box controller below giving an explanation for each point. (8 marks) 1. Shape of the pad makes it comfortable to hold. Fits the palms of the hand. 2. Positions of the buttons. The thumb can access all buttons quickly 3. Rubber buttons. Better grip when being used and more comfortable. 4. Different coloured buttons. Make the pad easier to use especially when learning a new game. 5. Wireless A safer gaming experience as you can not trip on the wires. Also easier to store the pads when not in use.
