This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 680599. 1 Industrial Thermal Energy Recovery Conversion and Management ‘I-ThERM’ www.itherm-project.eu Thomas Parissis Center for Technology, Research & Innovation (CETRI)

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 680599. 2 Domain 2: Integrated management of resources and Lifecycle Management Industrial Thermal Energy Recovery and Management EE-18-2015 : New technologies for utilization of heat recovery in large industrial systems, considering the whole energy cycle from heat production to transformation, delivery and end use. Project start: 1 October 2015 (42 months)

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 680599. 3 Industrial Thermal Energy Recovery and Management I-ThERM aims to investigate, design, build and demonstrate innovative plug and play waste heat recovery and conversion solutions to:  facilitate optimum utilisation of energy in selected applications that offer high replicability and energy recovery potential  enable heat recovery in the temperature range 70 o C-1000 o C using innovative 2- phase heat transfer technologies  convert effectively waste heat to electrical power over the entire temperature range.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 680599. 4 Industrial Thermal Energy Recovery and Management  Goals  To demonstrate, through application of the technologies to be developed in steel and food manufacturing facilities, energy savings in excess of 15% and pay-back periods of less than 3 years compared to current state of the art.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 680599. 5 Industrial Thermal Energy Recovery and Management  Focus on two-phase innovative heat transfer technologies (heat pipes) for the recovery of heat  High temperature heat recovery - innovative flat heat pipe heat exchangers  Medium to low temperature heat recovery - heat pipe based condensing economizers  Power Generation  Low temperature heat to power conversion- Trilateral Flash Cycle (low temperature waste heat sources, 70 0 C to 200 o C)  High temperature heat to power conversion- supercritical CO2 cycle (temperatures above 200 0C) Flat heat pipe HX Condensing heat pipe economiser  Use of heat : a) within the same facility or export over the fence; b) for generation of electrical power; or c) a combination of (a) and (b) depending on the needs.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 680599. 6 Industrial Thermal Energy Recovery and Management  Technical Impacts  I-ThERM will develop and demonstrate technologies that will enable heat recovery from a wide temperature range, particularly from low temperature sources, as low as 70 oC.  I-ThERM will concentrate on technologies that can recover heat primarily for power generation even though heat can also be used directly for heating purposes where suitable heat sinks are available.  Environmental Impacts  Technologies that will be developed under I-ThERM will contribute to the reduction of GHG emissions; Heat recovery will displace heat generated by boilers and also electricity that would otherwise be purchased by the national grid.  Economic/Social Impacts  The project will increase the sustainability of industrial processes; local power generation will reduce demand on the national grid.  Job creation: many opportunities for job creation in the manufacture of waste energy recovery equipment will be created
