Stem Changing Preterite Verbs

Review The stem of a verb is what is left after you have dropped the –ar, -er, -ir. If you have a stem changing verb, there is a change only in the stem of the verb. It does NOT effect the verb endings for each tense.

A verb that is a stem changer in the present indicative is not automatically a stem changer in the preterite……………sometimes, a verb is a stem changer in both, or in only one of the two. Remember, in the present indicative we call them BOOT verbs. WHY?

Pensar (e>ie) – To Think pienso pensamos piensas piensa piensan

Preterite verbs are not called boot verbs because they change in a different form. E > I Pedir – to ask for pedí pediste pidió pedimos pidieron

Since there is no catchy name for these stem changers, I have come up with my own (that’s always dangerous!) THONG VERBS Dormir (o>ue, u)– to sleep dormí dormiste durmió dormimos durmieron
