EDUCATION 1901 – Joliet Junior College, first public community college in the U.S., opens in Illinois 1909 – First Junior Highs founded in Chicago To increase high school graduation rate 1919 – Transportation for students system put into action (bussing system) Majority of teachers were female Ratio of girls to boys graduating from high school – 3:1
