Purpose To update the Nuclear Advisory Council on the activity and focus of the Sector Skills Council

Organisation Update New CEO appointed 8 th August – Joanna Woolf New Strategic Development Director Appointed – John Holton Office established in Warrington Strategic focus on employer engagement Development of 100 day plan

Four Strategic Objectives Understanding and Interpreting Industries Skill Needs Influencing Government and Industry to ensure there is appropriate investment in the skills required Ensuring skills delivery meets industry’s skill needs Improving the Cogent sector industry image to make it a positive career choice

Understanding and Interpreting Industries Skill Needs Identification of the industry skills issues and translation into appropriate action by: –Management and interpretation of Labour Market Intelligence (LMI) –Focused intelligence gathering to fill information gaps –Review and understanding of available industry intelligence –Routine management of the LMI

Influencing Government and Industry to ensure there is appropriate investment in the skills required Completion of Sector Skills Agreement Working with Government, SSDA, LSC’s, RDA’s, to agree action plan and appropriate resourcing Working with Industry to agree the action plan and appropriate focus and resourcing Working as part of the SfBN to ensure the sector priorities are actioned

Ensuring skills delivery meets industry’s skill needs Sector Qualification Strategies Influencing Higher Education provision and appropriate bodies Influence the school curriculum eg energy foresight Skills Academies Ownership of Standards Review of VQ provision Brokerage Quality Assurance of training provision Competence Assurance (HSE link)

Improving the Cogent sector industry image to make it a positive career choice Cogent needs to work to make sure industry gets the supply of skilled people it needs by: –Working on a sector basis to influence career choice –Developing material for our industries for use in careers advice through the careers service –Identify value adding industry and regional forum for input on careers and focus on these –Working with schools and colleges to make our skill needs attractive

Priority Tasks for the Nuclear Industry 1.LMI Cogent needs to complete this task for the Nuclear Industry. We have data on as is but we need to understand the future skills supply demand balance so that we can influence skills provision and supply. 2.NNSA Our E of I has been short listed and has a good chance of success. Cogent very much wants to be at the heart of this development on behalf of the Nuclear Industry. 3.Strategic Plan Cogent is committed to having an updated strategic plan by the end of October. This will be specific in terms of projects and deliverables. 4.Steering Cogent would like to take the opportunity to review the Industry steering of the Sector Skills Council and will be seeking input from the NESG and NAC on the most appropriate arrangements moving forward 5.Sector Skills Agreement Agree completion of LMI future supply/demand balance. Carry out training provision gap analysis. Agree industry actions.
