How’s my favorite class today?
2
Group Discussion Find one thing everyone in your group has in common. Something INTERESTING! What did you do last weekend? Did you go to the Eagle game? BSU game? Are you going to the ASL walk this weekend? Tell about any and all interaction you have had with a Deaf person. Have you seen the movie Everest yet? Do you think people who have a family and/or several people depending on them should take part in risky hobbies or activities? Why or why not? What is your favorite subject in school? Do you think you will pursue something in that field when you graduate? Do you think it is true that opposites attract? Give examples. Do you have friends or boy/girl friends that are opposite of you? Are your parents opposites, in what ways?

Welcome to Unit 19 – Sharing interesting Facts Lets begin with Distinguishing the Part from the Whole. To translate “whole-part” facts, we use topic- comment and contrastive structures. Remember this from the last 2 years?
4
Welcome! Happy Thursday! Sit in the same groups you were in last class. Review all vocabulary since 9/10. Each person takes a day to sign. If you don’t remember a sign, help each other out.
5
What’s trending in Deaf culture? Add the following vocabulary under today’s date. In a minute we will watch a video and you will try to find these signs: ALL OVER THE WORLD LANGUAGE SIMPLE IN DEPTH USE RANGE (RANGING) AVAILABLE SKIN SUPPORT
7
Notes Topic-comment structure requires the signer to use raised eye-brows to establish the topic (in this case, the whole) and then comment (in this case, on the part). Contrastive structure requires the signer to use the spaces to the left and to the right of him/her to compare and contrast the information (in this case, the parts).
8
Practice Take our class for example….. Use contrastive structure to discuss our class. Start with gender, hair color, etc….. Think of a statistic about our class to share with everyone. Think of a few, because someone may take yours before you get to share it.
9
Using Percentages or Fractions Fact: “1 out of every 4 women is addicted to chocolate.” Analyze the fact 1. Identify the whole 2. Identify the part 3. Determine the percentage or fraction 4. Determine what is implied for the rest of the whole
10
Sign the fact “1 out of every 4 women is addicted to chocolate…….. ……….using percentage ……….using a fraction (I will show you ratios later)
11
More practice This is a tough one: “8 out of every 10 books sold are paperbacks.” Note: translate the English phrase “books sold” using PEOPLE BUY ++ because the sign SELL++ refers to transactions between two people while BUY++ refers to the number of objects bought. For this fact, the emphasis should be on the books bought, not the people who sell books.
12
Again “8 out of every 10 books sold are paperback.” ________________________t BOOK ALL OVER PEOPLE BUY++, (lean to one side) 80 PERCENT PAPER DCL ‘cover,” (lean to other side) 20 PERCENT HARD+SURFACE. _________________________t BOOK ALL-OVER PEOPLE BUY ++, (lean to one side) 4/5 PAPER DCL “cover,” (lean to the other side)1/5 HARD+SURFACE.
13
Additional comments INTERESTING !MANY! SHOCKING “wow” OH-I-SEE KNOW REALLY/TRUE AWFUL SAD WONDERFULL COOL
14
Translation Guide 1. Set up the whole. (Use raised eyebrows). 2. Tell about the part using either percentages or fractions. 3. Contrast the part with the rest of the whole and add a comment. 1. 1 in 12 deaf children has deaf parents. 2. 1 in 9 teachers of the Deaf is Deaf themselves. 3. 1 out of 4 American Roman Catholics is Hispanic. 4. 1 out of every 10 restaurants in the United States serves pizza. 5. 57 out of 100 people on Earth are of Asian descent.
15
Translation Guide 1. Set up the whole. (Use raised eyebrows). 2. Tell about the part using either percentages or fractions. 3. Contrast the part with the rest of the whole and add a comment. 6. 1 out of 3 people in the world relies on rice for their survival. 7. 9 out of 10 new restaurants will not succeed. 8. 8 out of 10 boxers end up with some kind of brain damage. 9. 1 man in 12 is color blind, 1 woman in 200 is color blind. 10. 49 out of 50 tornadoes worldwide hit the United States.
16
Using Ratio To translate a fact using ratio you must set up a hypothetical group to represent the whole, then contrast the part from the whole. When setting up the hypothetical group, use a conditional clause. (i.e. suppose/if) When using ratio, the translation is often more literal. Ratio is used when the signer doesn’t have time or doesn’t know how to convert the data to percentages or fractions.
17
Same examples using Ratio ______________t ______________cond WOMAN ALL OVER, SUPPOSE GROUP (wh)4, [4/1 “from 4”] HOOKED CHOCOLATE. _________________________t ___________ BOOK ALL-OVER PEOPLE BUY ++, (EVERY (wh)10 cond Book, 8 “from 10” PAPER DCL “cover,” (lean to the other side) (wh) 2 HARD-SURFACE.
18
Are you normal? How many of you can……… Snap your fingers? Raise one eyebrow? Cross your eyes? Wiggle your ears? Touch your own nose with your tongue? Curl your tongue to the left, right or both sides up and in? Whistle? Do other stupid human tricks?
19
Homework Find two interesting facts using percentage or fractions to share with us next class. They will be graded.

Time to learn Country Signs! Woo Hoo! Take out a piece of paper to write a list of countries, and notes to help you remember how to sign them. There will be a lot. We’ll start with European Countries. For this, we go to the experts: You tube.
