10.2 Arthropods
2
POINT > Describe characteristics of arthropods POINT > Define exoskeleton and molting POINT > Identify the 4 largest groups of arthropods POINT > Define antenna
3
Arthropods have segmented bodies Arthropods have an external skeleton (exoskeleton) Arthropods have jointed appendages
4
An exoskeleton is a hard covering on the outside of the body Exoskeleton advantages: 1. Hard covering protects organs and is defense against predators 2. The exoskeleton is waterproof, keeps water inside the animal
5
An exoskeleton is a hard covering on the outside of the body Exoskeleton disadvantages: 1. The exoskeleton does not grow. As the animal gets bigger it must lose its exoskeleton and make a new one. This makes the animal vulnerable to predators 2. An external skeleton limits the size of the organism; these animals can never get very big
6
CHECK: What are 3 characteristics of arthropods? What is an exoskeleton? What is an advantage to an exoskeleton? What is a disadvantage to an exoskeleton?
7
Molting is the process of losing the old exoskeleton and making a new one The animal is soft and vulnerable during this time
8
The 4 largest groups of arthropods: Crustaceans Arachnids Centipedes and millipedes Insects
9
CHECK: What is molting? What are 4 groups of arthropods?
10
1.Crustaceans: most live in water 2-3 body segments 5 or more pairs of legs 2 pairs of antennae Crayfish, lobster, crab, shrimp, pill bug are examples

CHECK: What are 2 characteristics of crustaceans? What are antennae?
13
2. Arachnids: most live on land 2 body sections 4 pairs of legs No antennae Spiders, mites, ticks, scorpions

15
3. Centipedes and millipedes: all live on land Many body segments Many pairs of legs Centipedes – predators, inject venom, one pair of legs per segment Millipedes – scavengers, 2 pairs of legs per segment

4. Insects 3 body sections 3 pairs of legs 1 pair of antennae Only arthropod group that has flyers Ex. Flies, butterflies, bees, ants
