By: Dana Carroll BEYONCÉ'S ANTI-RACIST ACTIVISM

Beyoncé Knowles African American singer songwriter born September 4, 1984 in Houston, Texas Started performing at a very young age, member of Destiny’s Child (one of the best selling girl groups of all time), became a solo act Most nominated woman in Grammy history with 52 nominations

SOCIAL ANALYSIS In regards to her Formation music video, which sparked controversy due to its pro-Black Lives Matter themes, Beyoncé said, “I'm an artist and I think the most powerful art is usually misunderstood. But anyone who perceives my message as anti-police is completely mistaken. I have so much admiration and respect for officers and the families of officers who sacrifice themselves to keep us safe. But let's be clear: I am against police brutality and injustice. Those are two separate things. If celebrating my roots and culture during Black History Month made anyone uncomfortable, those feelings were there long before a video and long before me. I'm proud of what we created and I'm proud to be a part of a conversation that is pushing things forward in a positive way.”

SOLUTION Bringing awareness to the situation Supporting the black community (more specifically the family members of victims of police brutality) Healing and awareness through art

STRATEGIES Beyoncé is known for not giving interviews or saying much on social media, so most of her activism is done through her music and visual albums.

Reminiscent of the Black Panthers (a revolutionary black nationalist and socialist movement Commentary on police brutality

Formation: “I like my baby hair with baby hairs and afros. I like my negro nose with Jackson 5 nostrils.” Freedom: “Freedom! Freedom! I can't move/Freedom, cut me loose!/Singin', freedom!/Freedom! Where are you?/Cause I need freedom too!/I break chains all by myself/Won't let my freedom rot in hell” Beyoncé’s use of Malcolm X’s words: “"The most disrespected person in America is the black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the black woman. The most neglected person in America is the black woman. "

CAPACITY TO IMPACT CHANGE Beyoncé has a very large fanbase called the BeyHive that makes its presence known on every social media site Millions of fans, millions of followers, millions of listeners Beyoncé is one of the most powerful artists in the entertainment industry. She can make anything happen because her fans listen to her. She has no weaknesses because she is such a music industry icon; she’s had such a drama free career that there’s nothing holding her back.

HER VISION Beyoncé has never explicitly stated what a perfect future for the world would be to her, but it’s not hard to guess. I think she wants a world where black people don’t have to suffer through injustice, police brutality, inequality, or insecurity because of the color of our skin. In regards to black women, I think she wants us to be able to be proud of ourselves, to believe in ourselves, and to embrace our beauty. To make these things a reality, I think the first step is making everyone aware of the problems black people face in this country. Awareness is the first step to solving this problem.
