SJI is a nationally recognized workforce intermediary linking low income residents to livable wage career pathways SJI began as a program of the City of Seattle’s Office of Economic Development (OED) in 1997. SJI continues to receive support from the OED. SJI became a nonprofit corporation in January 2003 and is organized around three lines of business: Core Program Policy Fact & Data Core Program: Trains Participants for entry level positions by working with Community Based Organizations, Community colleges and Social Services. Policy: works toward reform that will eliminate barriers for both the entry level worker and businesses employing the entry level workforce Facts & Data: Collects and tracks information pertaining to participant progress and program development.

SJI seeks to place some of its participants in internships that have potential to become permanent positions. SJI seeks to find business solutions for both the entry level worker and the entry level employer.
