While the Moon orbits the Earth, the Earth orbits the Sun. Start at New Moon: Sun-Moon-Earth aligned. It takes the Moon 27.3 days to complete 1 orbit around Earth with respect to the stars. In the meantime, the Earth has moved through 27.3 days of its orbit (about 27deg along its orbit). The Moon & Earth must move together for an extra 2.2 days to re-align with the Sun.

Our Satellite....The Moon Scientists believe a large object collided with Earth knocking a blob of molten material from Earth into orbit as our Moon. Proof: Moon rocks collected by the astronauts are made of similar materials found on Earth and are the same age.

Which side of the moon do you recognize? Far Side Near Side Because the moon rotates and revolves at the same rate we never see the back side (far side) of the moon

Moon Phases 1. New Moon — occurs when the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun and the moon cannot be seen

2. Waxing Phases Happens between new moon and full moon More and more of the lighted side of the Moon appears in this phase a.Waxing crescent — first visible thin slice of the moon b.First Quarter phase — half of the lighted side of the Moon is visible c.Waxing gibbous - more than one quarter is visible d. Full Moon — all of the Moon’s lighted side is visible

Waxing Crescent 1 st Quarter Waxing Gibbous If the light’s on the right It’s going to get bright !

3.Waning Phases Happens between full moon and new moon The Moon becomes dark during this phase a.Waning gibbous — starts after a full moon when more than half of the lighted side is still visible b.Third Quarter phase — only half of the moon’s lighted side is visible c. Waning Crescent — the last visible slice before new moon

Waning Gibbous 3 rd Quarter Waning Crescent Light on the Left It’s Last Quarter! Remember all the “L’s”

AMAZING EARTH SCIENCE FACTS 1.A _______eclipse occurs when the moon comes between the earth and the sun. 2._______ are caused by the moon and sun’s gravitational pull on the earth. 3._________ tides occur when the sun, moon and earth are in a straight line causing the highest high tides. 4._________ tides occur when the sun, moon and earth are at right angles causing the lowest high tides. 5.A ________eclipse occurs when the moon enters the earth’s shadow. solar Tides Spring Neap lunar
