10
Strategies for the M4 Lottery u Neuro taken early allows more flexibility for USMLE 2 CK & CS u Subinternship taken early can be helpful for residency application but not necessary u Focus on electives most important to you u You will probably change your schedule when September rolls around so don’t worry about perfect schedule u You do not need to fill an entire schedule in lottery
11
Elective Requirements u 28 weeks of electives u No more than 8 weeks in a subspecialty for credit u No more than 10 weeks away at LCME or ACGME programs for credit u No more than 3 two-week electives for credit u “Flex elective” requirement (8 weeks medical, 4 weeks surgical, 4 weeks ED/ICU) u Full Schedule in place by January 15
12
Electives u Research electives for credit must be approved by OMSP (4 weeks credit for a project that will extend longer). Must be with Rush faculty. u Can take more than 78 weeks of clinical rotations u Some electives always require course director approval for enrollment u 4-week add/drop requirement (a few are 8-week) u Away electives may be on different calendar u Away electives will count toward the “flex elective” requirement
13
Stroger Electives u Stroger electives are not “away” electives u Stroger electives are designated “8xx” u Additional paperwork for Stroger electives may be required u Requests for dropping must follow rules u Spots available in lottery but if not used may be released to non-Rush students
14
Electives u Always check Oasis for course specific information – need for course director approval, add/drop period, contact person, first day of clerkship u Waitlisted students should check Oasis regularly to see if slot has opened u If slot opens, e-mail RMC_electives @rush.edu to alert us u Priority for waitlist given to earliest requestor u PLEASE DON’T BANK ELECTIVES
15
FAQ – 2-Weekers ? u Consider a 2-week rotation when calendar for away electives off u Consider a 2-weeker when scheduling USMLE 2 CK & CS u 2-weekers include anatomy, palliative care, Ophtho, ENT, Nuc Med, palliative care and others u Maximum of three 2-weekers for credit
16
Away Electives Should I do an away elective?
17
FAQ – Should I do an away elective? u Will give you perspective of geographic suitability u Will give you firsthand info on a particular program u May make you more competitive for a particular program u Won’t help you with other programs in area
18
FAQ – When should I do an away? u Early if you want to see an area, make contacts to get an interview, or know the program of your dreams u Late (January) if you have interviewed and know the program of your dreams Remember: no more than 10 away weeks or 8 weeks in a subspecialty for credit
19
Away Electives u Individually arranged u Must be at LCME or ACGME program and approved by OMSP u Non-Rush (non-Stroger) locations appearing in Oasis are informational only u Must go through away rotation application process u Process starts in April/May since schools won’t assign until their own students taken care of
20
Away Electives Application Process u Contact program of interest for their materials and timeline u AAMC on-line links at Http://services.aamc.org/eec/students/ u Completed application is submitted to OMSP, Gloria Watkins, for approval u At that time pick up an away clerkship approval form and submit with each application u You will be contacted via e-mail when paperwork is ready for you to pick up and submit to the away institution – allow 10 days

Planning Your M4 Year u Use early electives for Letters of Recommendation (July-Sept) u Month off to interview gives more flexibility (usually Dec or Jan) u No interviewing or USMLE during Neuro or SubI u Limited time off for interviewing during elective at discretion of course director but never more than two days in a 4-week elective u Avoid USMLE on first day of an elective
