It Won’t Happen Here ► Galveston, Texas 1900 ► Galveston, Texas 1900 ► C A T E G O R Y : 4 D E A T H S : more than 8,000 D A M A G E : $29.6 billion (in 1998 dollars) ► The greatest natural disaster to ever strike the United States occurred in Galveston, Texas. In the early evening hours of Sept. 8, 1900, a hurricane came ashore in Texas bringing with it a great storm surge that inundated most of Galveston Island and the city of Galveston.
