Understanding Dynamic vs Static IP addresses

DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol DHCP defines mechanisms through which clients can be assigned an IP address for a finite lease period. –This lease period allows for reassignment of the IP address to another client later, or for the client to get another assignment, if the client moves to another subnet. –Clients may also renew leases and keep the same IP address. DHCP provides the mechanism for a client to gather other IP configuration parameters, such as WINS and domain name. ALL Bright House Networks broadband accounts are Dynamically assigned!

STATIC IP ADDRESS A static IP address is a number that is assigned to a computer by an Internet service provider (ISP) to be its permanent address on the Internet. Computers use IP addresses to locate and talk to each other on the Internet.ISP Business Class customers pay for a static IP address.

History It would be simple if every computer that connects to the Internet could have its own static IP address, but when the Internet was first conceived, the architects didn't foresee the need for an unlimited number of IP addresses. Consequently, there are not enough IP addresses to go around. To get around that problem, many Internet service providers limit the number of static IP addresses they allocate, and economize on the remaining number of IP addresses they possess by temporarily assigning an IP address to a requesting Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) computer from a pool of IP addresses. The temporary IP address is called a dynamic IP address.DHCP

Major DHCP Features

DHCP Operation

DHCP Discover DHCP Offer DHCP Request DHCP ACK 1 2 3 4 Easy way to remember the order is DORA

Troubleshooting Ensure that customer is DHCP enabled Use command – ipconfig /all at the command prompt to determine both IP address and if DHCP is enabled

Here you can see that DHCP is enabled and the lease date

Enable DHCP in the TCP/IP settings Select Start/Control Panel; go to Networks and Internet Connections. Select Network Connections. TCP/IP Settings in XP

Right click on the correct Local Area Connection for the connection you are trying to enable and select Properties

Highlight Internet protocol and select properties.

Ensure that DHCP is enabled. If the user has the IP address manually keyed, ask the user to select obtain IP address automatically.

Dynamic IP addresses are given for all residential accounts. T/F Static IP addresses are leased to customers. T/F What command displays IPaddress and the lease date? Question 1 Question 2 Question 3 Quick Review:
