3
SKIN-THE BODY’S COVERING Largest organ Composed of sweat and oil glands, nails, hair and skin System of specialized tissue (3) Protector (5) Removes bodily waste products
4
THREE LAYERS Epidermis Dermis Subcutaneous tissue
5
EPIDERMIS Outer layer Deepest layer is called the basal layer Melanocytes (5)
6
DERMIS Second layer Located just below the epidermis A living tissue Composed of several types of connective tissue Histiocytes Fibroblasts Mast cells Hair shafts Shape determines hair “shape” Arrector pili
7
SUBCUTANEOUS LAYER Lipocytes Protects deeper tissues of the body Heat insulator Connects dermis to muscles

10
SEBACEOUS GLANDS Sebum Carried to edges of skin by ducts and excreted through pores Closely associated with hair follicles Influenced by sex hormones (2)
11
SUDORIFEROUS GLANDS Tiny coiled glands found on almost all body surfaces Produce sweat (5) Ceruminous glands (2) Diaphoresis (3)
12
HAIR Melanocytes Hair color Gray hair
13
NAILS Keratin plates that cover the dorsal surface of the last bone of each finger or toe Grow in thickness and length by division of cells of the nerve root at the base of the nail plate Grow ~1 mm a week May regrow completely in 3-5 months Toenails grow more slowly than fingernails https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxctFr_7mX4 Evolution of a smashed fingernailhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxctFr_7mX4

CANCEROUS LESIONS Basal Cell Carcinoma Most frequent type of skin cancer Slow growing tumor Usually occurs on the upper half of the face Squamous Cell Carcinoma Tumor may grow in places other than the skin (mouth, larynx, bladder, esophagus) May metastasize in the lymph nodes Treatment for BOTH basal and squamous is surgical incision or radiation therapy Malignant Melanoma Tumors often metastasize into the lungs, liver, and brain Treatment includes excision of the tumor, regional lymphadenectomy and chemotherapy to prevent metastases
