Grouping School of Leaders February 13, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Gardendale, AL 1 Diocese Of Birmingham Alabama

Leader’s Prayer †Lord grant that we may understand the necessity for depth in our Movement, rather than surface glory. Convince us of the truth that colorful programs do not constitute success. †My God, give us a spirit of self sacrifice so that we may offer everything for Your cause: our time, our abilities, our health and even our lives if necessary. Instill in us courage in our initiatives, good judgment in our choice of the right means, and that determination, which in spite of failures, assures victory. †Move away from us the tiny rivalries, sensitivities, discourtesies, pride, everything which distracts from You, everything which divides or discourages. 2

Leader’s Prayer con’t †Help us to maintain at a high level, a meaningful supernatural and mutual charity among ourselves, so that each one will seek by preference, the most humble task and will rejoice at the good performed by others, so that all our spirits, united in a common purpose, will have one single spirit, Yours Jesus, and that this spirit may let us see Your attractive goodness marked in all our faces, Your warm accents in all our words, and in our lives something superior to the world, something that proclaims Your Living Presence among us. Amen †Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patron of the Americas, Pray for Us. †St. Paul, Patron of the Cursillo, Pray for Us. 3

Prayer to the Holy Spirit Come Holy Spirit and fill the hearts of us your faithful and kindle in us the fire of your love. Send forth your spirit and we shall be created, and you shall renew the face of the earth. Oh God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit instructs the hearts of the faithful, Grant that by same Holy Spirit we may be made truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolations. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen

The Year of Mercy †Pope Francis: “Live your faith during Lent, perform works of mercy” †“Lent is a time of conversion and a time to deepen one's faith, demonstrating and sharing it through the corporal and spiritual works of mercy” †"Faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit," the pope said in his message for Lent, Pope Francis said.

Works of Mercy †The Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy are actions we can perform that extend God’s compassion and mercy to those in need. †When we have mercy we are making other person’s life easier

What can I do to make the most of the Year of Mercy? †The particular ways one can celebrate this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy are up to one's own discernment. To that end, we've prepared a helpful (but not comprehensive) list of ideas to get you started! †Go to Confession regularly — monthly or even weekly. †Forgive those who are in need of your mercy.

What can I do to make the most of the Year of Mercy? Fulfill the conditions for plenary indulgences and consider offering those indulgences for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Go on a pilgrimage. Practice the corporal and spiritual works of mercy every day.

†Place the Divine Mercy Image in a prominent place in your home and venerate it daily. †Pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy daily, imploring mercy "on us, and on the whole world." †Make the Stations of the Cross regularly, especially at 3 p.m., the Hour of Great Mercy. †Pray Pope Francis's Year of Mercy Prayer.

The Corporal Works of Mercy The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. The Corporal Works of Mercy are these kind acts by which we help our neighbors with their material and physical needs

What are the Corporal Works of mercy? †Pope Francis has asked us to rediscover the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. Throughout the Gospels Jesus admonishes us to follow his example, an example that sets down tangible ways we might better serve our brothers and sisters in need. As its name implies, the Corporal Works are directed toward serving the body: corpus, in Latin, means “body."

THERE ARE SEVEN CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY 1.Feed the hungry 2.Give drink to the thirsty 3.Clothe the naked 4.Shelter the homeless 5.Visit the sick 6.Visit the imprisoned 7.Bury the dead † This Jubilee we should make a concerted effort to perform these beautiful Works of Mercy.

†"The works of mercy are a very simple, concrete, direct, alive, daily, easy, accessible-to-all way of living the Jubilee of Mercy," he said. "The works of mercy describe what we as Christians can actually do every day, and that is why I find them so fascinating.“ Pope Francis

Year of Mercy Prayer Pope Francis Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: "If you knew the gift of God!"

You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

Techniques Talk “3 Encounters on a Cursillo Weekend” With Self With Christ With Others 21

3 Encounters on a Cursillo Weekend 22

Encounter With Self †The Cursillo gives us an opportunity to stop and face ourselves. Who am I? What is the purpose of my existence? Do I feel happy all these years that I have acted like a hero in my life? †Meditate on the words of St. Paul, “I want to do the good that is in me, but end up doing the evil that I do not want to do.” I am divided, confused; there is a struggle. The material things attract me. It is imperative to break through this dividing wall. Only then will I be able to find myself. I must put aside my pride and make a way to the light to see what I must improve in me, to see what I must remove, what I must include, and what I must change... 23

Encounter With Christ †The Meditation of the next morning, “The person of Christ”, dictates the rhythm for the day. Christ was presented to us as real, alive, personal, a friend, and a brother. The rollo that follows, “Study”, guides us to know Him better. The words of St. Augustine –“That I know myself, Lord, and that I know you Oh Lord!”- was an inspiration to me to connect both encounters. One cannot love what one does not know. † †You find yourself with your Father, with your older brother, and with your friend. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – three in one. “It is not I who lives; it is Christ who lives in me.” 24

Encounter With Others †The joyful environment that exists in the third day sets itself up for the third encounter (An Encounter with Others). One must take advantage of it. The message of the rollos facilitates the encounter with our brothers and sisters. This day promotes not so much upon the summary of the rollos, but more so in the sharing among the Cursillistas from the other decurias (table groups). †You did not choose me; I chose you and appointed you to go and bear much fruit. (John 15:16) 25

Encounters Summary †The method of perseverance that is presented on the final day of the Weekend perpetuates the treasure of the Grace. The strategy used during the three days has been oriented to the life of Grace; therefore the School of Leaders must accentuate the importance of the third day. These three encounters should be intensified in the Postcursillo. †It is important, to indicate, that these three encounters (Self, Christ, Others) are not only facilitated by means of the message of the rollos but, more by the personal contact and by means of the dialogue in the decurias (table groups); there you find the pulse and the affirmation of these encounters. 26
