RECONSTRUCTIONRECONSTRUCTION 1. Title and Name

6. EFFECTS OF THE WAR The Civil War had major effects on the North and the South. Thousands of young men from both regions died or were wounded during the war. Many returned home missing legs, arms, or bearing other scars from the fighting. Both sides experienced great human suffering.

Economically, however, the two regions were affected differently. The North prospered. Its manufacturing and industries grew. More people were employed as the Union worked to support its war effort. The southern economy, on the other hand, suffered. The South had depended on cash crops.

The end of slavery meant that it no longer had its main source of labor. Since most of the fighting took place in the South, many of the region’s farms, railroads, and industries had been destroyed. At the end of the war, the North had grown stronger. The South faced an uncertain future.

6. EFFECTS OF THE WAR NORTH Prospered economically Manufacturing and industries grew New technologies Boost in steel production Transportation improved More employed SOUTH Cities, farms, and homes burned Railroads and bridges destroyed Businesses and industries destroyed 300,000 men dead Suffered economically No main source of labor

5. The Amendments 13 th - made slavery illegal; abolished it 14 th – gave citizenship to all people born in the U.S. 15 th – no citizen could be kept from voting because of race.

4. JIM CROW LAWS Jim Crow was the name of a clown character. “Jim Crow” is used to describe the laws Southern states passed to prevent former slaves from having the same equal rights as whites. These laws prevented freedmen from voting by making them pay a poll tax or taking a literacy test. Some even stated if a person’s grandfather had voted then that person could vote. Some laws stated that former slaves had to be in separate places from whites.

3. THE FREEDMEN’S BUREAU HELP FIND LOST RELATIVES STARTED COLLEGES BUILT SCHOOLS TAUGHT TO READ AND WRITE HELD OWN COURT OF LAW FOR EQUAL RIGHTS RECEIVED MEDICAL CARE HELP WITH CONTRACTS AND FAIR PAY GAVE LAND GAVE FOOD AND CLOTHING

2.Sharecropping Former slaves needed work and could not buy land. Plantations needed workers, so would hire former slaves to work the land for them. Workers would be paid ½ of the money when the crops were sold. However, some owners charged for missed days, rent, or other costs during the year. When the crops were sold, the farmer would not have enough money to pay debt. The farmer would be made to stay until his debt was paid.

JIM CROW LAWS (A1) The Jim Crow laws were to prevent blacks from having the same rights as whites.Blacks and whites had to eat separately. Jim Crow was the name of a type of actor who painted his face to portray freedmen. You could not date or marry outside your race or you would be hung. In order to vote, your grandfather had to vote, or pass a test to see if you could read. Some have to pay a poll tax to vote. Blacks and whites has to ride in different railroad cars.

JIM CROW LAWS (A2) Jim Crow laws were laws created for freed slaves. Blacks and whites could not live, work, eat, or sleep together in the same room. Homer Plessey took the railroad to court. Blacks would be hung if they got near a white’s property. In order to vote, a person’s grandfather should have voted. Blacks had to pass a test to see if they could read in order to vote. Poll taxes also prevented blacks from voting. The slaves were free, but were not able to use their new rights.

JIM CROW LAWS (A3) There were several types of Jim Crow laws. These laws were also known as Black Codes. These laws separated, or segregated, blacks from the whites. Blacks were given the right to vote but had to pay a poll tax. It was well known that blacks had very little money to spare. Slaves were given many new freedoms but the whites wanted to prevent them from having any power.

JIM CROW LAWS (A4) Jim Crow laws were first known as black codes. Some laws required blacks and white to be separated, or segregated. The term Jim Crow came from a white actor who blackened his face and performed like a fool. Dating or marriage between races was a crime punishable by death. Poll taxes were implemented to vote even though blacks had little money. Literacy tests were used to see if blacks could read and write before voting. Some laws said if a person’s grandfather had voted then that person could vote. It took decades to knock down these laws.
