1
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Useful in examining soft tissues such as the brain and spinal cord.
2
How does it work? The patient lies in a large, hollow, cylindrical magnet. This magnet produces 2D and 3D images of various organs, showing any abnormalities, identify tumors, and detect early signs of disease. It is expensive but it often eliminates the need for exploratory surgery and harmful X-rays.

7
EEG (electroencephalograph) Measures electrical activity of the human brain A printout can be used to diagnose disorders (ex: epilepsy, tumours, sleep disorders) Monitors the condition of patients during surgery. Can be used to determine brain death.
8
How it works? Brain cells send messages to each other using electrical currents, this current is measured using electrodes placed on the head. The EEG will display the signal on the screen as a series of many lines representing activity in different areas of the brain Gel is used between the electrode and the skin to transmit the signal Electrodes are made of gold, silver or platinum

12
Computerized tomography (CAT) scans Used to obtain images of virtually every part of the body It produces a detailed, high contrast view of the body’s internal structures.
16
How it works? A scanner moves around the patient’s body, emitting and recording x-ray beams at many different angles. It uses multiple beams and measures the degree of absorption.

18
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan Identifies which areas of the brain are most active when the subject performs certain tasks. Some of the things it measures: brain abnormalities (tumours, memory disorders and seizures) normal human brain and heart function. helps doctors evaluate how well organs and tissues are functioning (blood flow, oxygen use)
19
How it works? Patients are injected with a radioactive dye. The dye gives off radiation which is detected by a computer
