Chris Czarnik CEO Career [RE]Search Group

CEO of Career [RE]Search Group 12 years of job search training experience Helped thousands of job seekers through seminars, classroom instruction and individual advising Author of the book “The Human Search Engine™” HSE™ for Career Search has been distributed to every member of the US House of representatives Developed curriculum/guest teacher at UW Madison Athletics Department and UW Center on Education and Work

Current job search methods are all reactive Not focused on “right job and right situation” 75% of jobs never advertised Great jobs never make the newspaper HR’s job is to systematically eliminate 98% of everyone who applies Most job search does not ensure a great fit for the employer or job seeker

A way to have the job seeker be responsible for their result? A way that turned job counselors into coaches and teachers A way that provided a standardized and systematic approach A way that provided clear guidance as to what a “good fit” was A way that taught a life skill

HSE™ is a logical, linear, project management based job search process Based on the way that large international companies have defined, researched and marketed new product for decades Proven process - 12 years and 1000’s of clients Can be used for education decisions, job search and to find anything of value in life

Definition- What is it? What is it not? What does it do? What problems does it solve? What are its benefits? Research-Who has the problems that the benefits solve? Is there anything else out there like it? How big is the market for this? What will people pay for it? Marketing- Putting the product in front of people who likely have the problems that this can solve. Word of mouth guidance to others that need this

There is at least 75 years of research on personality types Based on your preferences and individual values People see the same things in a different way 16 distinct personality types based on MBTI Websites of interest- 16 personalities.com and personalitypage.com

Achievement statements as a source of job search firepower 5-7 work or school related achievements that demonstrate your ability to make something happen or create value What did you do? How did you do it? What was the result?

Look at each of the achievements Make a list of the skills and abilities associated with making that achievement happen Use the Venn Diagram to find the skills that are most commonly associated with your achievements Like to doGood At Paid to do

Common job title Industry specific terminology Identify values of the organization that align with yours A _____________ position involving ________, __________ and __________ for a _________ organization focused on ________.

Job seekers are usually unaware of at least 85% of all of the organizations that could hire them Applying to the places everyone knows about is asking to stand in a line of 50 Applying to places less known allows you to stand in a line of 2 or 3 You can’t go to work for an organization that you don’t know exists

Who has the problems that I am uniquely able to solve? Which industries have those types of problems? Which organizations exist within those industries? What is the value of being able to solve that problem? What is the skill set of the people viewed as able to solve those problems?

Your research goal is advice, guidance and feedback The goal is to get that info from people who “live in the world that we want to live in next” Advice from the people who have walked that path before you reduces mistakes and wasted effort Given the opportunity, people want you to learn from their experiences

This is not “networking” in the traditional sense At no time during this phase will you ask for or inquire about a job The goal is to start very generally and get guided by people in very specific directions Confirm the “Right job/Wrong situation” conundrum

Nobody knows you…the Oktoberfest example I can’t hire you until I know you exist...getting the same meeting a different way

Want the best result for the least cost and work Will look for talent but won’t look far Lack third party confirmation in their hires Will solve an existing irritant problem if the answer is right in front of them The alternative is to hire a complete stranger with out confirmation

How can you: Solve my problems Make my life easier Get me closer to my next goal or bonus

Babysitter Mechanic Best Pizza Doctor/OB GYN

You cannot push your way into an organization…you have to be invited Once hiring you is their idea…it is DONE Dairy Queen and the ice cream truck
